how do i convert m2t to usable QT in FCP?

Have to tried using log and transfer for AVCHD footage in FCP 6.0.5 first?

Mount your disc.

Open the log and transfer window.

Use the buttons to locate the AVCHD folder.

Thumbnails will appear.

I received a hard drive last night with a bunch of .m2t that I need to edit on FCP5. Based on a bit of research I bought clipwrap and converted them to .mov However, when I try to import them to Final Cut then open them in the viewer I get a message that reads:

"Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card."

Also, when I open them in Quicktime they don't play, just a black screen.

Still pretty new to FCP so any advice/help would be great. Thanks -Josh

Sony has it's own plugin that will allow you to log & transfer m2t files from their HVR-Z7 and HVR-S270 compact flash recorders immediately. It's here:

It's still al step less than when using Clipwrap, although I also find this a program very worth while it's money.

Concertpix, I checked out the Sony link but it looks like its only for FCP 6 and I'm on FCP 5, so I don't think it'll work with my version.

Also, Tim, I chekced out the video you posted and he certainly had no trouble at all, but I'm just not getting results like that.

Last night I made a little bit of progress, I converted one of the .m2t files with MPEG Streamclip (from Squared 5). I was able to view the result (a .mov version of my clip) in Quicktime (which I was not able to do with the .mov file that Clipwrap produced from my .m2t files) but when I imported into FCP 5 it was a bit "chopped" when I played it back in the viewer and when I placed it in the timeline it tells me I have to render before it'll play in the canvas.

Yes Im pretty sure you'll need FCP 6 for the Sony driver (I'm not by my work machine to double check at the moment). I have converted M2T files with MPEG streamclip successfully before. When you say 'chopped' do you mean in terms of playback or you've lost some of the image?

(The need for rendering means your sequence settings don't match the footage setting)

sorry, I meant to type "choppy" in that the playback is not smooth. As far as matching the sequance settings to the footage settings that is certainly something that I've goofed up on, but I'm not 100% sure how to find out what my footage settings are since I didn't shoot it, it was just hand over to me. (Probably a topic for a seperate thread I guess)

My real disappoint is why the Clipwrap didn't perform as I expected. It converted the .m2t to .mov super quick, but then FCP & Quicktime won't play the .mov files.

Just had a quick look at the Clipwrap website. I think you need to have Perian installed for the playback of the converted M2T files http://www.clipwrap.com/support.php.

I've never used Clipwrap so I could be wrong. If not there's an email address on their support web page. Maybe they could shed some light on your problem.
