Disk Utility Internal Error

I have a MacBook running OS X 10.4.11. When I try to repair permissions, I get the following error:

Disk Utility internal error; disk utility lost connection to disk management tool...
I have tried safe mode boot and running disk utility from CD. Did not work.

Any suggestions. Thx a lot.

Oddly enough, it may have to do with the Chess game application - at least it did in the past. Just about all reports of this error that I can find date from Panther days, except for a recent set with reference to the Japanese version of DU under Leopard.

I tried with Terminal:
sudo diskutil repairPermissions /
-disk management crashed at the very beginning of the process-

I tried opening my Mac in Safe Mode then opened Disk Utility and clicked Repair Permissions
-disk management crashed at the very beginning of the process-

I tried with OnyX
-disk management crashed at the very beginning of the process-

When I click "Repair Disk", I get no error message and Disk Utility does not detect problem with Hard Disk.

I re-installed 10.4.11 Combo Update. Tried Disk Utilities / Repair Permissions.
-disk management crashed at the very beginning of the process-

So... ?

If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.
