Headphone remote control not working

For the past week or so I noticed that my remote control (clicking the microphone) was not working. I use this once in a blue moon, so I had no idea of what it could be and my phone has suffered no trauma recently. (Other than an uneventful upgrade to 2.2.1!)

So having the opportunity, I made an appointment to see a Genius in the London Regent Street store today. After stating that they would be happy to replace components (headphones, iPhone) the Genius first poked the socket with a bent paper clip and pulled out paper or fluff. After that it worked perfectly! He told me that one can do this at home but obviously with care, and not to stab blindly!

I'm impressed, and not having found any references to the problem when I searched for it I thought I would offer this experience. Naturally I have to warn that you would do such a thing at your own risk, it was not formally endorsed by Apple as a solution, and your mileage may vary!

Absolute Genius. I was looking to buy more headphones assuming they were duds, thought i'd check online for any possible cause or control function i'd overlooked....NO! Fluff. Needle trick did it for me.
I don't carry the phone in my pocket, so don't know where the fluff came from, must be because I carry it in my naval!
Thanks for the info.

LOL I carry mine in my pocket so this was understandable. I am just surprised that it was not reported or explained anywhere else. Perhaps it's too obvious! I was particularly peeved because I have been careful to use an adapter rather than just plug other headphones without a microphone straight in so there had been no chance of shorting out the microphone circuit. And friends tell me that they do that all the time without any ill-effects, so just what is the point of the adapter??

LMAO... I thought this was huge technical problem and getting all set for a trip to the Genius bar, I tested the headphones on my wife's 2G so I knew it was my phone and I really need it to work for Runkeeper App when I'm out jogging.

Armed with a mag-light and a long pin I picked out a piece of fluff any belly-button would have been proud of! Pure Genius.

Thanks for advice boys.. I love it when a plan comes together.

but then i looked in the light again and saw that there was a little bit more fluff.. removed it.. and TADAAA! 😀

Happy Happy iPhone, happy happy steve 😀.

I tried it, got the fluff out & still it randomly speeds up playback & loose responiveness of the ipod controls on my iphone 3g when plugging anytihng into the headphone jack. 😟
resetting my iphone helps, for a while, the problem seems to happen when plugging anything into the headphone jack. tried loads of different headsets & jacks to plug into my car stereo.
