Flash Plugin Causes Crashes...

Hello,

Recently I have been getting app freezes in Safari 3.2.1, Firefox 3.0.7, and NetNewsWire and have had to force quit them. At first I thought I might have a user profile issue or something. I tested in another "clean" profile and got the same error so basically narrowed it down to Flash. I went to adobe's site and updated to the latest player. I wasn't too out of date since I have CS4 installed. That seemed to improve things a bit. But I still was getting freezes and decided to install the Flash Block extension for Firefox which caused it to not freeze...unless I clicked on the flash bit that froze it before which when I knew it was Flash causing the crashes. It isn't all flash. YouTube video is fine. But some videos on Gizmodo or Collegehumor seem to be doing it today. So seems to be maybe the embedded flash video player/version being used. But it just started happening in the last couple days. Anyone else experiencing this type of problem?

I guess I'm alone on this one.

I repaired permissions which did find a few of teh Flash plugins out of wack. Still not better though. I would try creating a new Firefox profile, except its happening in Safari and any app that uses safari to display html pages so its the flash plugin itself. Maybe I'll try uninstalling then reinstalling the Flash Plugin instead.

Repair your disk from your install disc. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.

Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.

Hi there,

I have the same problem as mentioned above when playing flash video, only in my case, the OS freezes up totally and the mac needs to be rebooted by holding the power button. It does not crash on every flsah movie though, just when it feels like it i guess.

I thought it was a safari problem at first, i removed safari and installed firefox. I also tried upgrading to the newest flash version. The problem occured just now again, about 2:50 into this video http://tinyurl.com/d9q25j

I just got a new macbook pro last week that has this problem, so am very curious if this is somehow a hardware issue of this model? This is about the only description of my problem i could find that comes close. My OS is about as clean as they come at this point, only iLife and iWork installed. And perian.

I will now try removing and reinstalling the flash pluggin as mentioned above and update if anything changes for me. I am not getting error reporst after I boot the system so i have nothing to post in that area.

I uninstalled the Flash player/plugin with the official Adobe uninstaller, then reinstalled. Then performed a Verify Disk (no problems) and repair disk permissions from the OS X DVD. The permissions for a few things was wrong, among them the flash player & plugins.

After rebooting and testing with the sites I was seeing crashing in everything seems to be back to normal. I haven't had a browser crash in any of my browsers or netnewswire since. I did have a few system lockups but those seem not to be related to flash at all.

Try using the adobe flash player uninstaller, then reinstall the latest player and then reboot from the OS X disc and verify your startup disk & permissions, repairing if necessary. One of those things seemed to do the trick for me. Could have been the permissions thing, though just repairing permissions normally from OS X not booting off the disc didn't improve things for me.

Good Luck.

I am getting exactly the same problem, I have tried removing Firefox completely and uninstalling flash and then doing a fresh re-install of everything and no luck, really odd as my home mac is fine but my work machine running the same settings doesn't work, this has all started happening since installing Flash CS4

Have you tried verifying the startup disc and permissions from the OS X DVD? Also make sure you've updated Flash CS4 to the latest version. I believe there is a 10.0.1 update. Also does the crashing happen in all the browser you have installed? Is it all flash or just some flash? For example I would only experience crashes with certain sites and those sites seemed to use a custom flash video player. YouTube and adobe.com and google video were fine. Have you tested it in another account to see if it happens there as well?

If it only happens in Firefox or in a specific account it could be a extension or user account that's out of whack.

Good luck.

I have now removed Flash CS4 as i only downloaded the trial version, currently using CS3 suite, the crashing happens in both safari and firefox on any page with any flash element, i have to force quit the application, I have currently disabled the plug in to enable browsing but its quite important i get it to work as my job as a web designer relies on my ability to view my work! 🙂

i have the same flash player (10) running in my virtual machine (running windows XP) with no problems, so something must of happened when installing cs4 on my mac?

I have also repaired all permissions etc and done a disk check but to no avail.

I had this problem with Safari crashing on pages with some embedded flash videos. I found Firefox 3 and NetNewsWire also crashed at some flash. I tried uninstalling Flash Player (using Adobe's tool) and reinstalling it and that didn't help. I then tried Repair Permissions run from the install disk and that didn't help. I then found that from another account the same webs pages worked fine in Safari so it must have been something with my account. I didn't have any user plugins or InputManagers installed. I did find a solution though. I removed the folder /Users//Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/ while no browsers were running and then restarted Safari and the pages displayed fine without crashing.
