Anyone else having Bluetooth keyboard problems with new mini?

I got the new mini, the base model and am having a problem, wondering if anyone else does too.

The mini is paired via Bluetooth to the aluminum Apple keyboard. Also connected is a Microsoft Explorer Mini mouse which also runs at 2.4 GHz (though it's not paired via Bluetooth). With my previous Mac mini, I never had a problem. With the new one, however, about half the time I do something somewhat CPU/GPU intensive such as turn on the screensaver or watch a high-def movie (either an Apple H.264 trailer or a downloaded video), the keyboard loses the connection with the Mac and an graphic appears on the screen saying connection lost. Sometimes the keyboard reconnects, and sometimes I have to press a key first for it to reconnect. It's rather annoying.

The keyboard has not given me a single problem with my old mini in the past year, so I know that's not what is broken.

So is anyone else having this problem?

MacBook Pro, Mac mini, Windows PCs, iPhone 3G, iPod classic, iPod nano

I've had no BT issues for several days now. Network, superdrive, and display issues still occur but very infrequently.

I would just be sure to report the problem to Apple as soon as you can. As long as you are on record and have a case number, I'm sure Apple will be able to do something for you if this is eventually identified as an issue.

I do have a case number with Apple, and when I check on the status of my case, the website said closed. So, I called in again and spoke with another representative who sent a small program to grab a bunch of logs and what not. He was going to forward all of it to the engineers.

He also gave me a way to get in touch with him directly if I needed to.

While he couldn't help at this time, his whole manner was very respectful. Hopefully after Apple gets enough info, they will be able to solve the problem

Plea to Apple for Support:

Dear Apple,

This brand new Mac Mini is running a small POS business for me. Because of counter space and cash drawer reasons, I have chosen to use your BT wireless keyboard and mouse. Yesterday, for the fourth time just this week, my Mini became unresponsive in the middle of a business transaction. The internal BT chip for the Mini just must fall into sleep mode but at the worst possible times.

Apple, please fix this. It's not the batteries, the keyboard and mouse are no more than 16 inches from the Mini itself. Please issue a BT chip fix cause that must be the issue as both the keyboard and mouse work without issue with any other Mac.

Thanks, A Small Business-Owner running his business via Mac, but struggling...

I have been having the same problem since I bought mine on the 28th of March.
I get the lost connection all the time and have had the BT freeze on me twice now and had to reboot to get BT back.

Had a support call last night and tried to reset things and when we got done and off the phone I lost connection with the keyboard....

Going to try and take it back and see what they have to say.

Just adding my name to the roll call, my Bluetooth mouse (tried one Mighty Mouse and one Microsoft) will drop out and there is no way for me to re-establish a connection without rebooting the computer. I have been in contact with Apple support and they walked me through all sort of resets. Time will tell if that helped or not.

I followed Ben's solution and it worked for about a day. No problems at all yesterday, and then this morning, my wireless Mighty Mouse stopped working once again.

Right now, I've got a wired mouse plugged in as well, just so I can quickly select "Disconnect" and then "Connect" again via the Bluetooth menu. This is the quickest way I've found to reconnect my mouse when this happens.

Very annoying, but I can't afford to send my Mac Mini in for repair or replacement; it's my only workstation!

Have the same problem with my new mac mini. I use the Apple BT mouse and keyboard and from time to time both connections get lost. But it is not displayed. When i put the mini to sleep with the powerbutton and wake it again after 1-2 sec. the connection ist back. So i think in my case its not a lose antenna cable or pins. Think its a software buck. With my old mini (C2D 2 GHz) i lost only the connection of the keyboard once a day but it was reconnected automatic after a few seconds. Maybe its the same buck but worse with the new mini.
So i hope/wait for an update.

I've been following this thread for a while as I've had similar bluetooth problems. My (white plastic) keyboard and mouse wouldn't pair during initial set up but I got them paired after completing set up with a usb keyboard / mouse. That lasted a week with no problems and then I installed a utility that I belatedly realised wasn't supported on 10.5. It forced a restart and I saw the 'updating boot caches' message. On restart the bluetooth keyboard and mouse wouldn't connect.

After uninstalling and deleting the utility (can't remember what it was I'm afraid) I finally called apple support and managed to get the keyboard and mouse connected, but for the next 10 days they both kept freezing or not connecting in the first place, much as described in this thread. Finally I did an erase and install and restored only the user accounts from a time machine back up.

That was 4 days ago and so far I've had no problems. It's early days yet, but regardless of whether the problem returns or not it would seem clear that, at least for me, the issue is software related not hardware.

Same for me. New Mini 2.26 - Apple wireless keyboard and mouse. Working fine, no problems ever with Mini Mac 2.0. Just got the 2.26 - had problems with dropping connection with both mouse and keyboard since I first switched on and paired.

Bluetooth in menu bar stays with connected symbol, and System Pref reports mouse and keyboard connected with good battery even when they both are inactive.

I use a wired keyboard or VNC to disconnect and reconnect just one device and both start working again. Behavior does not seem to change with how long Mini Mac has been on, so not sure about the overheating suggestion.

Mouse is quite jumpy all the time so I was thinking bad reception. My Mini Mac is less than 12 inches from mouse and keyboard.

Again, mini 2.0ghz (intel graphics) worked fine with keyboard and mouse in same configuration.

My situation identical to to jm1066 - moved up from previous Mini 2.0 which worked perfectly for 9 months with my Apple BT keyboard and mouse. Took me ages to get a a connection when starting up for the first time and the keyboard now stops working once or twice a day, even though Sys Prefs says its connected. Have to disconnect and reconnect to get it to work. I've had to abandon the Apple BT mouse because the motion is now slightly jumpy all the time. This is a real disappointment after waiting so long for a bump on the these machines, with a major price jump in the UK as well.

My keyboard is wired, but my Bluetooth mouse is having the same problem. Sometimes it just freezes the cursor and sometimes it shows "Connection Lost" and, even though my mouse is in discover mode, it says it can't find it. Of course, this happens at the most inopportune times and I have to force quit all applications and reboot.

So angry right now. They want to replace my machine but I use it for work, school and research. I'd have to mail it to them and the entire process would take 10 days. When I asked the product specialist Valerie how that would affect my Microsoft Office and programs I already had installed she said I should have another license. Well I do but I shouldn't have to use it because the machine is defective. Yeah I have an external I use for time machine but what if I didn't. Start over? No way. I'm so ****** I'm thinking about returning it! F*! Valerie was F*ing clueless!

My mini is now officially dead. A warning to you all. My bluetooth issues were just the start with this mini!

It started yesterday morning with a "beep beep beep" repeated twice before normal start-up. I should have done a back-up but didn't have the time. After work today I turned on the mini and all it does is beep. Somewhere a piece of hardware has failed. At least I did a clone about a week ago so I lose very little.

Return labels are on the way. Once the replacement mini is up and running I'll report whether or not bluetooth issues persist.

"Of course, this happens at the most inopportune times and I have to force quit all applications and reboot."

Try pressing the power button on the back of the mini (just press once, don't hold it down). This will put the mini to sleep, and you can press the button again to wake it up. This fixed my bluetooth issues when I lost the connection and it's quicker than rebooting.

same here - bought the mini from Apple Store two weeks ago - so it's now beyond the 14-days - although I did buy applecare.

biggest problem is the mini-dv to dual-link adapter ($100!!) is causing blips and dropouts on my ACD 30" - but this wireless mouse/keyboard issue is also wildly frustrating.

my work around is to keep a wired mouse plugged in and when the wireless drops out, i 'turn bluetooth off' at the top right of menu bar - in itself an awkward task since there's a delay in its response - and sometimes when it does respond the menu only flashes for a millisecond before disappearing again. anyway, toggling on and off here seems to do it, even if it does take 3 minutes and the problem returns within half an hour. ffs.

Anyone else having Bluetooth keyboard problems with new mini?
