Image Capture Preferences

I am trying to change the settings of image capture, but I can try and click anything but I cannot access the preferences. This is starting to become very frustrating because now iPhoto is used for importing the pictures and I want to use a different program.

I can start image capture and it works also when I connect my camera. This little screen does show.

I can go to the menu file and click preferences. Clicking however does not help because nothing pops up nor a screen in which you change the settings. That is the problem I ran into. I would like to change the default program from iPhoto to iview because it handles Raw format much better

I am the sole user and according the account tab I am "allowed to adminster this computer". I would consider this as being an administrative user. I have tried your suggestions, but unfortunately this does not help. There are more strange things in the image capture. If my camera is connected I cannot select any location (Download to) nor select an automatic task. It looks as though iPhoto has hijacked the whole application.

Hi there,
I wanted to add to this post as I'm having a similar experience. I would like to use image capture as it lets you choose the shots you want to download, but I can not get any preferences when it opens. I've tossed the preferences and fixed permissions (sole use and administrator) and still no joy. The top level window also does not show anything in the pull downs. When the camera is connected to the computer, iPhoto takes over and seems to shut everything else down. Can I stop iPhoto from doing this (can find anything in its preferences)? Any help will be appreciated.

I'll throw my vote in to that hat too.

I've been using Image Capture for a long time with no issues until now. I'm not sure what the difference is but I can only assume it's my upgrade to Tiger.

When I plug in my camera (canon G5) now, Image Capture doesn't open at all. I open it manually, and then I have to turn my camera off and back for it to see it.

Now whereas usually the window has Download to:(destination) and Automatic Task:(options) listed, those two drop down menus are grayed out and I can't access them.

Additionally, if I choose "download some", I can't even delete pictures from the camera manually anymore. The button is gone!

I try to "show toolbar" or customize it and nothing happens.

I've deleted the preference file and still no avail.

I'd really like to start being able to use this program again since it's the best native software.

Help?

A friend of mine tried her hand at figuring out this problem and found that I had moved the application from the top level of the Applications folder to another folder and when she moved the application back to its original place, the whole thing worked for me. Originally I did toss the preferences and fixed permissions. So check to see if your version of image capture is in a folder other than the top level of the Applications folder. Hope this may work for you. I was told not to be so tidy!

I have found out that there are more programs that do not like being moved to a different location. For example if you move iPhoto to a for example iLife subfolder you cannot update the application anymore because it cannot locate the program. This is also valid for Garageband.

I will be very carefull not to move applications from now on.

Regarding the bug, should we raise this as an issue, or is Apple monitoring these discussion groups?

I came across this topic because I was having similar problems with Image Capture - because for the first time, as a little experiment, I have decided to keep my applications in subfolders in the Applications folder (from a fresh reformat).

I had no idea moving applications (such as Image Capture and above mentioned iPhoto) would make any difference - but now I do - I was always under the impression that it didn't make any difference where the application was in order for it to run... obivously this isn't true - I wonder though is this something that is limited to Apple apps only?

Until it's resolved I suppose Image Capture and iPhoto will just have to stay put.
