Q: Color toner cartridge in LaserWriter Pro?

Can I print in full-spectrum color if I find a color toner cartridge for my old LaserWriter?

Just kidding!

I actually have two of these old machines, and it has occurred to me that it would be more interesting for one to print with black toner, and the other with cyan. I know I could wait until I get an empty cartridge and have it refilled with cyan toner, but I was wondering if there is any place I can buy a compatible, brand-new cartridge that comes with cyan toner in it. Is there such a cartridge in existence that was originally intended to be some different color?

I imagine a refilled cartridge would be problematic because not all of the black could ever be removed, possibly leaving random streaks. Also because I don't have an extra cartridge to fill right now.

There are some toner cartridges available for the most popular printers and copiers in several different colors, not just cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. Also in Magnetic Ink (MICR) for printing your own checks. A quick search turned up this site, featuring a dozen-ish possible colors for special order. But your printer is not on their list an any color.

Thanks for the help. The LaserWriter Pro 600/630 is compatible with HP toner cartridge 98A (aka 92298A). Here is a list of printers that also use this cartridge:

Apple LaserWriter Pro 600, Pro 630

    Brother HL Printers HL-1260, HL-1260 DX, HL-1260 E, HL-1260 NE, HL-1260 NTR, HL-1260 PS, HL-1660, HL-1660 D, HL-1660 DX, HL-1660 E, HL-1660 N, HL-1660 NE, HL-2060, HL-960

    Canon EP Series EP-E

    Canon Laser Series LBP-1260, LBP-1260 Plus, LBP-1260C, LBP-1260T, LBP-8 IV, LBP-860, LBP-EX, LBP-P430

    Canon P Series P 270, P 430

    HP LaserJet 4, 4 Plus, 4m, 4m Plus, 4Plus, 5, 5m, 5n, 5se

Using this data, I found the HP laserJet 4m on the site you linked to, but unfortunately, it is only available in black.

    Any other ideas?

Send an email or call that site, or search for others who do the same "trick" and contact them about it.

I imagine a refilled cartridge would be problematic because not all of the black could ever be removed, possibly leaving random streaks. Also because I don't have an extra cartridge to fill right now.

It appears that if a company truly remanufactures cartridges, rather than simply pours more toner in, they would have a clean cartridge to load with whatever color toner is desired. The problem then becomes finding bulk colored toner that can work in that cartridge. There may be no one making bulk colored toner that complies with the required fineness, for example, or the requires fusing temperature, or some other attribute required for your specific printer. But you would have to find someone who deals with this issue all day every day to know the answers.
