I have a NAS Server that shares my music. When I start iTunes 8.1 I can see the share but when I click on the share, it disappears. It never connects like it did in 8.0. When I restart iTunes, it shows back up again but never lets me connect the the share.
Very bad upgrade. I hope that time machine will let me revert back to 8.0 until this gets fixed.
I have a Macally G-S350UN NAS. Yes, the share is seen and has always been seen in iTunes. It is still seen until I click on it Then it no longer is seen. It just disappears from iTunes.
Do you have multiple computers? When you try to access it from one, does it then disappear from the other. I'm wondering if maybe something iTunes 8.1 is doing is crashing the NAS and it's rebooting. Do you have any way to examine the NAS to see if that's the case?
The NAS is not getting rebooted. I also have a Windows machine that has not been upgraded to iTunes 8.1. That machine can still connect to the share just fine afterwards. It is only 8.1 that disconnects and does not show the share any longer.
I'm having a problem with shared libraries in 8.1 as well. Until now I've been accessing my music at home from work using RendezvousProxy. Everything has been working fine for months until 8.1 installed this morning. Now when I open it, it doesn't show any shared libraries available. I checked the preferences to make sure that "Look for Shared Libraries" was still enabled and it was. Very disappointed.
Open it up and take a screenshot of the bonjour record for your NAS. Then click your NAS in iTunes. What happens to the bonjour record for the NAS? Does it disappear. We should probably loop our old buddy Roy into this one. Send your screenshot and your results to him by email: <royb@apple.com> and tell him Toonz sent you. Also make sure you include a link to this thread so he knows what you are talking about.
I'm having exactly the same issue. RendezvousProxy is running and nothing shows up in iTunes. Worked perfectly minutes before upgrading to iTunes 8.1. Anyone know where to get a download of version 8.0?
Ok, Downloaded Bonjour Browser but the only thing it shows me about the NAS is its IP address and the port that it is using (3689). There isn't any other information that is shown using BB. Even after I click on the share, nothing is changed in the browser. So as I can figure out, the NAS is still broadcasting on port 3689. It appears that iTunes shows it as a share and once it is selected, iTunes doesn't show it anymore even though it is still broadcasting on the port.
If I open up iTunes preferences and turn off "Look for shared libraries" and then click to turn it back on, my share shows up again. However, clicking on the share makes it disappear again.
I am having same exact issue. I am running FreeNas and everything was running fine until I upgraded to 8.1. My other computer has 8.0 and no problem with my shared library. When I launch iTunes my FreeNas share is there but when I click on it, it dissapears. I have to relaunch iTunes to get it back.
basically same problem here. Just installed newest itunes on my son's (windows) machine. The shares on the other network computers show up in the shared library window but as soon as you click on one it shows "loading library" for about a second than goes right back to the local library.
All the other comps on the network can see and open the shared library on my son's comp - but he can only see but not open anyone else. I just upgraded one of the other machines to the same newest version - yet no change in behavior - that machine can access the lib on my son's, but he can only see yet not open the other shares.
Do I need to downgrade to a prior version ? - What's the best (safest) way to do that ?
I'll add another "me too." Running FreeNAS .69RC2, sharing an iTunes library over the local network using Bonjour/DAAP. Just upgraded two laptops to iTunes 8.1. No longer able to use the shared iTunes library on the FreeNAS from either laptop. Same behavior that has been described - shared library is visible from iTunes, but disappears when clicked.
Unable to downgrade to iTunes 8.0.2, because I can't find an installer (the old installer has been removed in favor of the 8.1 installer on apple.com/downloads.
I guess we have to wait for someone in the open-source community to figure out what changed and update the open source DAAP services or Apple to release iTunes 8.1.1 and restore compatibility. I know which one I think is more likely...

I was able to successfully downgrade back to 8.0.2. The installer is still available, but you won't find it by searching apple.com/downloads. Google "itunes 8.0.2 download" and you should find it (hosted at apple.com/downloads, even).
To successfully reinstall 8.0.2, you'll need to manually remove iTunes 8.1 from your applications folder or the 8.0.2 installer will decline to install, saying that a newer version is already installed. Once installed, you'll need to rebuild your library - when you launch 8.0.2 after having 8.1 installed, it will tell you that your library is not readable because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Just go to your Music/iTunes folder and rename the file "iTunes Library" to something like "iTunes Library_8.1"
iTunes 8.0.2 will now launch successfully, but with an empty library. Just go to "File->Add to Library" and select your iTunes music folder. All of your music should be added back.
Edit: going back to 8.0.2 did, in fact, restore my ability to use my FreeNAS shared library.
Same thing here. Just upgraded to 8.1 and my shared iTunes library on my FreeNAS box shows up, click it and it goes away. Looks like an update to the DAAP service is required or iTunes needs to "unfix" itself
happened to me too. This is happemning on my MAC OSX and on my Vista box consistently - seems the iTunes rel 8.1 wasn't tested against this... it happens with Freenas firefly which worked great before ...
