Memory card show empty, but isn't.

I have a repeatable bug. I have two different kinds of memory cards for my Canon Rebel XT plus a 60GB iPod with color screen. If I import pictures from one of the cards, it works fine. If I don't quit iPhoto and restart, when I try to import from the other card, or from the iPod, it tells me there are no images to import. If I restart iPhoto, it imports them fine again. This happens in all combinations, as soon as you change what the source of the images is.

I eject the cards properly before connecting the new card. Is any one else having this problem? Does Apple have a fix for it?

Ross:

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What are the two cards? There have been other posts where some high capacity cards were not supported by iPhoto or the OS X. Can you see the photos on that one card using Image Capture, located in your Applications folder. If not then that may be a very good indication that the card is not supported. Also open System Profiler with the camera connected and see if it is recognized (do with both cards).

Thanks, I'll try those things. One card is a Sandisk Xtreme 512 MB. I should be more clear. Both cards and the iPod work fine independantly. The problem happens when I import from one of them, eject the card properly, and insert the other card or the iPod without closing iPhoto in between. The second import shows an empty card, until I restart iPhoto, and then it works fine also. For example, I plug in the sandisk, and import 20 photos, eject it, and then connect my iPod (60 GB color screen) and it says it is empty. I close iPhoto, and re-open it, and then I can import from the iPod. This is by no means a show stopper, but it is a little annoying. BTW, it is a Canon digital Rebel XT.

I'm experiencing a similar problem. From what I can see, my Nikon Coolpix 4500 is working fine. I can shoot and the pics are recorded on the CompactFlash (CF) card (i.e., I can review on the camera).

When I plug the camera into my PowerBook G4 and turn on the camera, iPhoto (5.0.4) launches immediately, but then it just sits there for about 30-40 seconds. Then I get the spinning beachball, followed by a message saying I have "...no photos to import".

I've tried this with 2 different CF cards - both SanDisk, one 32MB the other 128MB - both have a bunch of photos on them, but I get the same result, so I don't think it's the cards. iPhoto is recognizing the camera correctly (i.e., it shows up in the 'source' list in the application) so there doesn't appear to be a problem with the camera or the cable.

Anyone?

Try using Image Capture to upload the photos manually to iPhoto or to the desktop and then into iPhoto. That's my preferred method as it gives me greater control of the process in case there's a glitch in the upload process - too many reports of incomplete uploads and complete deletions by iPhoto. Again, that's just a personal preference to minimize problems.

Hi. I am new to these discussions and don't even know how to post a question ⚠ so am tagging this one on to one which seems similar to the problem I have. I have a Mac G5 and a Nikon D100 digital camera. I have successfully imported images from 128 mb (and higher) capacity cards for sometime, usually via an Imation Flashgo card reader and usb, and have a large iPhoto library.

Today I took some 27 pictures. When I inserted the card the first time I got an error message saying iPhoto couldn't import because the file was corrupted. Ditto the second file. I removed the card and restarted the machine. Now, the disk image apppears but I get no iPhoto import message at startup and on clicking on the DCIM folder inside the card icon, the card appears to be empty of images. Similarly, when I put the cf card back in the camera the message indicates the card is empty. However, on the computer, the remaining capacity of the card is listed as only 4.5 mb (card capacity is 128 mb) which suggests that the files are on the card somewhere.

The only thing I did differently today was (initially) to make a direct contact between the camara and the usb port using a cable rather than the Imation card.

Other cards can be read, both with the direct cable connection and via the Imation card reader.

While not a total disaster, I do seem to have lost the family pictures I traditionally take on Christmas morning which is sad and regrettable. Are they gone forever or can someone suggest a way of recovering them? With thanks in anticipation of responses.
