Voice Over Problems

The Voice Over feature is only saying generic stuff
ie: "All Songs, Playlist 1, Playlist 2, etc."

I've:
-Done a fresh install of iTunes 8.1.0.51 (wasn't using iTunes before this)
-iTunes downloaded Voice Over and it was installed.
-Enabled the voice over feature in the summary tab, and it is on English.
-Only have English songs with Tags (the meta data with the song info)
-Tried turning on and off Manually Manage Music

When I sync the iPod it say "Generating Voice Over Messages" in the status bar. Yet it's not working.

This is really frustrating, although it's not an essential feature, I was certainly excited about it.

1) Is there anyway to reinstall Voice Over?
2) Any other suggestions? or anyone else with the same problem?

sorry, I have no ideas on a fix.

but since you brought the subject of VO up, I'm politely asking you, or anyone what is the point of having songs introduced by a voice? I know who sings each song I've got on my various iPods. I know within a couple of seconds. Just how does the VO improve the experience of listening to music. I haven't understood the feature's usefulness from the Apple video.

The song isn't actually introduced by VoiceOver. But you can use voice over (by pressing the button) to check what you're listening to.

I also recognize most of my songs, so I don't need it to identify the track. But it is useful for navigation, such as moving through songs, and mainly for navigating playlists. Instead of memorizing the playlist order, if I can hear it, then I can easily navigate through it (my playlists are alphabetically).

I could just wait for tracks to start up and listen to them, but it'd be quicker to just hear the playlist (or track) title and move on from there.

I like to listen to new music on a play list that is playing randomly. And since I do not like to read while I am running, I like the idea of pushing a button to find out who it is and the name of the song. And on a completely unrelated note, my son is blind and loves music. I put new music on his iPod all the time and he has no way of knowing who it is.

You can set the new Nano to read the info every time a song comes on but I don't like that. So once someone gets an adapter out there that allows me to use the headphone I have on the new Shuffle, I will get one.

We had the same problem when we had it set to manual sync,
and just dragged the songs to the shuffle.

I then did a restore through iTunes.
Made sure that the songs I was copying had all the Artist and Title info
I actually created a new playlist, but don't think this is a must
Instead of drag and dropping a playlist, I just chose to sync it on the music tab of the shuffle in iTunes
Now all is good playlist is read by title, and song and artist are described

I have two older shuffles. With one, I have iTunes randomly fill it from my whole library, which has about 4000 songs. This if fun, because I get to hear songs that I have not listened to for years. And I definitely hear songs (especially from my Jazz genre) that I have no clue about the name of the song or even the artist.

For the problem reported by the original poster, is the voice feature working on your Vista installation for other applications?

I am running into the same problem. While it will say the name of some playlists it will say +playlist 1+ or +playlist 4+ for others. I have plugged it in and renamed the playlists several times. I am now down to one playlist where it says +playlist x+ instead of the name, but I don't know why it's doing that. Also, I had some problems where it changes languages and reads the name of the track and artist back to me in what sounds like French. If I keep holding down the button it eventually reverts back to English reads the playlist name (or not, as in just +playlist x+). Other than those two bugs, it's been great. Has anyone been able to get around the generic playlist thing? I really don't want to have go restoring and copying again if I don't have to.

How much free space is left on the iPod Shuffle?
If there is too much content on the iPod, you may have to free up space on the Shuffle and then uncheck the option for Enable VoiceOver support, click Apply, re-enable VoiceOver and click Apply. That way the voiceover files are re-generated and synced over to the Shuffle.

This could also happen if the iPod Shuffle is disconnected before the VoiceOver files are generated. Make sure the iPod is directly connected to a high-speed USB2 port on the computer, using the cable that came with it.
Try unchecking the option to Enable VoiceOver, click Apply, and then re-enable Enable VoiceOver and click Apply. Then leave the Shuffle connected to the computer for a longer length of time, so that the voiceover files are generated and synced to the device.

I went ahead and freed up some space on my Shuffle as well as disabled the Voice Over, then synced, then re-enabled it, and re-synced. The Shuffle is now saying all the correct names of the playlists.

I was having trouble with the Shuffle intermittently speaking the artist and track name in other languages, however playlists, audiobook names were always spoken in English. I changed the default Voice Over language from Automatic to English in the Shuffle options page. I also selected every track in my iTunes library, did a "Get Info" and then chose English in the Voice Over language pop-up under the Options tab, then re-synced the Shuffle.

To this point it speaks everything in English and says all of the correct playlist names.

Thanks for your help.
Eric
