30" HD Cinema Display with Mini Port to Dual Link DVI Adapter
In Using the new MacBook Pro 17", 2.93 GHz and 8GB of Ram the 30" HD Display gives me problems. The only issue seems to be that when displaying black, there are extremely visible horizontal flickering lines on the screen. I am running in performance mode but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Any suggestions?
I looked at some SS of people with a similar sounding problem, but their pics look alot "worse" than what I am experiencing.
On black screens I get a constant "flicker" of lines. Usually they are green, but sometimes they can be blue or red (or at least I "think" they look blue or red).
I wonder if it's not the Dual-Link DVI adapter. I had this monitor on an older, slower computer and didn't see the lines.
Since I rarely need black on my screen, I just changed the desktop picture and the problem is "solved."
But still, a $3,000 monitor (back in the day) with a $100 adapter cable on a brand new computer shouldn't have any issues, imo.
Seems like this problem still persists...
I have dual 30" displays running on a new mac pro. One is using the mini-display port to DVI, the other direct DVI. The horizontal lines appear on which ever screen is plugged into the mini-display port port to DVI when I view a dark and/or black image. I have swapped out the mini-display port to DVI adapter and still the problem persists. Any recommendations on a fix?
me too. two 30 inchers and a new mac pro with HD4870. mini display port side flickers all day long when using the dual-link dvi adapter. talked to apple yesterday. he said that its probably a firmware issue that will be resolved with a future software update.
yeah. don't understand why they jump on things like mini display port if it isn't going to work perfectly, even if it is the adapter and such. its getting really annoying with my workflow too.
In spite of what a Genius might tell you, I strongly advise against waiting for Apple to fix this issue with a firmware or software update. That isn't going to happen because it is a hardware problem and software can't fix it. The 30" monitor has been around for like what, four or five years now, right? And the DVI noise issue has been there since day one. So if it was fixable by firmware, that would have happened a long time ago, and it hasn't.
If you sit around and wait, that will just be eating further and further into the warranty period basically waiting for nothing to happen. The only way to fix the issue is to swap out the problematic equipment for working equipment.
i don't think its the 30" monitors. all of my new 30" monitors do this on the mini-display port side of the HD4870 graphics card. on the DVI side of the card, they don't exhibit any problems. so its the graphics card. hardware or firmware, i don't know.
ok so it's not the 30". it's the mini display port to dvi for 30" that is the culprit. But still, how do we get this resolved. either way Apple needs to handle this.
my flickr is back too now after the PRAM zapping.
Seems like another issue.
the tech lady had said if that didn't work to get your system disks out and boot holding the D key down. from there run the hardware test. that's next for me i guess.
Apple has you chasing your tail. The only thing that is going to fix the problem is to swap out the adapter for a working one. The problem is with the hardware and no amount of resets, reboots, reinstalls, etc. is going to fix it. The hardware test isn't going to find the problem, either.
