1.Quit iTunes.
2.Rght click on My Computer/Computer and click Manage.
3.Click the plus symbol to the left of Services and Applications.
4.Select Services listed under Services and Applications.
5.Double click Apple Mobile Device Service in the right hand panel.
6.Click the Stop button under the General tab and leave the Apple Mobile Device Service Properties window open.
7.Connect your iPod and wait until it is visible in My Computer/Computer.
8.Click the Start button in the Apple Mobile Device Service Properties window.
9.Open iTunes.

If you don't see the Apple Mobile Device Service, then Repair your itunes from the Control Panel (Add/Remove Programs)

you were close, but here is the actual way.

1. Quit i-tunes
2. Right click on my computer, then select manage
3. Click the + on Services and applications
4. Selsct services
5. Double click on Apple Mobile Device Service in the right-hand panel
6. Under general, select where it says Startup type, and choose automatic
7. Then press apply but dont close the window yet.
8. Now, under service status, choose start, it will now start.
9. Then apply, and you may now close that window
10.Open i-tunes, and there you go. It will now start backing it up or syncing, or whatever you want it to do.
