Printing PDF of 100 page book missing pics at end

I am unable to successfully create a PDF that accurately reflects my book. First issue, the pdf created is always off by one page which drives me crazy. I guess the cover throws it all off by one. But my BIG problem now is that I cannot make a PDF with all the pics. Somewhere around page 90 to the end of the book the images disappear. Actually, I've tried this a zillion times now, and it looks like the glitch is happening in the Assembling The Book stage...
I am getting so tired of Mac apps being so unreliable when the pressure's on.

Some additional info... I found here (thanks, Old Toad) the valuable info on where the pdf that uploads resides. Sure enough, that file has the same problem as the one I get when i Print to PDF. This morning I have created a small book using the photos that wouldn't print in the 100 page book, and they are not corrupted; they show fine. I also have reinstalled & updated iPhoto, optimized and repaired all my drives with Norton & Disk Warrior. I deleted an old iPhoto library which freed up 12Gb as well. The objection seems to be a large softcover book which has 100 pages. I'm really stumped on how to overcome this. Is this file which uploads simply a PDF like any other that is created? I have Adobe CS & possibly could learn how to use Acrobat and create the PDF file myself.

What size does the pdf file end up at? I'm shooting in the dark here but maybe there's a max size issue when generating from iPhoto. Can you do a print to pdf and get all of the photos?

FWIW: If you search the Apple forums you will find that most posters are adamantly against using Norton Utilities. So many report disasters when using it on the later OS Xs. You can search and read their comments. DiskWarrior on the other hand is very highly regarded.

Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

The PDF file is approx 150Mb. Perhaps you're right about a file size limit. Oddly, I've experimented with different Themes and gotten different results. I've forgotten the name of the theme at this moment, but, one of them generated 4 or 5 more pics than the Picture Book Theme i'd been using.

I cannot get all of the photos to show up in the PDF, although those pages are appropriated (empty). That's really the crux of my problem. I've tried just about every angle except tomorrow i'm going to try copying my iPhoto Library to my G5 which has 6.5Gb of ram i think. i've been working with my laptop up to now, which has 1Gb ram i think. I talked to the president of SharedInk today and he thinks it might be a not-enough-ram issue. and looks like i'll have to start over, but i can prepare everything in Photoshop and bypass iPhoto altogether. He tells me that photos should be jpegs Level 10 at 300 dpi. he also supplied the dimensions, but they weren't 8.5 x 11 so i'll have to redo my image sizes.

This morning I created a small book of all the pics that won't show up in the PDF, just to see if there was some kind of corruption. It's only about 10 pages and it was all there, perfect. What's happening, you can see it, is that when it is assembling the book, the amount of time it takes to work on each page is nowhere near what it had been up to page 90. In fact, it sort of leaps forward and glosses over pages 91 thru 100. Except page 92 shows up!

I've been trying various Themes but that seems not to matter.

Tried doing this over using my G5 with a ton of RAM, and still iPhoto's
PDF generated, has 10 or so blank pages from page 90 on. To meet a deadline I ended up converting my Tiffs to Photoshop PDF's using a batch command, then loading those into Acrobat (the one with CS) and creating one PDF file. I then had Kinko's print the book. It cost me a fortune.

I am now wondering if I could substitute my PDF file that I took to KInko's for the one that iPhoto generates that uploads to Apple. I have a feeling there has to be some more info in that file like the prefs info that i changed upping the resolution to 300. Oh yeah, iPhoto is crashing a lot these days for no apparent reason.

You can't substitute for the iPhoto PDF file. It is of a unique format, 2 book pages per PDF page. If you want to get a copy of the PDF file that iPhoto generates of uploading and printing start the book ordering process and then stop after the book has been assembled. Then do the following:

Panther (OS X 10.3):

How to find the iPhoto generated PDF file:
1. Click on the Order Book button in iPhoto. You will see a dialogue box that says 'Assembling Book.' When the 'Order Book' page appears, either click 'Cancel' or leave iPhoto idle at this page.
2. Go to the Finder (click the blue Mac face in the Dock). Choose 'Find...' under the 'File' menu (command-F).
3. In the Find File window that appears, choose to 'Search in' 'Local Disks.'
4. Search for items whose:
- Name, contains, iPhoto
- Visibility=invisible items
5. Click 'Search'
6. In the Search Results window that appears, double-click the iPhoto folder which resides in the invisible HD/private/tmp/501/TemporaryItems folder. In it you will find a pdf file with 'Book' in the filename similar to ipbook-113667200.pdf. (If there is more than one, you will want the most recent file.)
7. Copy the pdf file to the desktop to open and preview.

You can then study the file and see what other info it contains.

Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

First of all, thank you for your expert assistance! Because of you, I've found out about the 300dpi preference trick and finding the temporary pdf file...
Actually, i'd made that part of my routine. It's just that i'm not a programmer and i am never sure if there some invisible things happening.

Throughout all this, i'm becoming very substantially disappointed in Apple's tech support mechanism. If you can't get a real person to help, it's just about useless. No one i've told about this can come up with the solution.

Linda,
No, I never could resolve this with iPhoto... I ended up using Acrobat Professional to complete making a PDF with the missing pages, but I thought it probably wouldn't work to try to send that to Apple. I ended up doing it at Kinko's with a different spiral type binding which turned out great. I had learned here about SharedInk.com, which was very helpful in granting me the disk space I needed, etc. but I had to convert all my files to accomodate their dimensions and lower the jpeg quality to 10. I didn't find this to be the solution I wanted... there was some color shift in their book, although pretty nice. The whole thing was too expensive really, but having a prototype has been very cool. Lots of good feedback. If you want to see the book as a slide show, it's http://homepage.mac.com/james.madison.thomas. My Photos, password=delight (lower case).

I have been having the same problem for weeks. Has anyone found a solution? I am trying to print an 88 page book and the 'secret' pdf always shows blank pages from pages 79 on. I have also tried creating a separate book with the photos from pages 79-88 and they work fine. Also, when I tried to save as a pdf from the print function, the pdf showed blanks from about 50 or so on with a few blanks interspersed before that (though it's always 79 on with the secret pdf). I spent several hours at the Genius Bar in an Apple Store and they could not help me. I also called Apple Care and was told he couldn't stay on the phone with me long enough to complete the book assembly to see if it happened again (not really sure what I'm paying for w/Apple Care if they tell you they have to hang up before they've figured out the solution to the problem). Neither installing the iPhoto update nor completely reinstalling iPhoto seems to help. I'd be grateful for any suggestions!

Same Problem here in Germany:

I ordered a 100 page Photobook of my wedding and I thought everything was fine. When I received the book I was absolutely stunned of the quality: Really nice!
But then I realised that beginning from page 84 all pages are left blank.
I was totally shocked! 120 EUR and the book is not perfect.

Then I began to search for the problem: After all there was no chance to get iPhoto to build the photobook correct.

Today I said to myself: Okay install everything new (Os X .4 and iPhoto 5) and check if it happens again.

So I kept my iPhoto Library and installed everything on a clean Harddrive.

But I tell you: IPhoto stopped again at page 84.

So because of the fact that it was a clean install with all actual updates to Os X and iPhoto the reason seems to be the Library.

Last thing I will try today is to check the rights of all files with the Disc-Utility.
And I will tell you if it works.

Finally I hope that Apple will take back the book until they are able to get iPhoto to build a correct photobook.
