Q: My Ipod won't play audio on my TV only video!

I've notice that everyone else seems to have a problem playing video on their TVs but not audio... If I play a video I hear audio, but if I want to hear music only I don't hear anything!

I own an Apple Composite AV Cable and it is plugged in correctly, but I can't still play any music. I own a 5th generation Ipod and a Samsung LCD HDTV.

Any suggestions? Should I buy a different cable?

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

hi, i am having the exact same problem. i can play video and audio fine but if i just want to listen to my music i can't find any solutions. i also have a samsung tv and have tried many combinations of different channels and switching the components around. i don't believe this can be solved by buying another cable because the composite av cable has everything we need to play just music. someone please help!!

LCD HDTVs, at least the newer ones, will not output audio only. I have a Samsung 32 inch LCD HDTV, and it, too, does not play audio only. If the TV does not detect video, it will not output anything. This issue is independent of whether you use a composite or component AV cable. As long as there is no video to output, no audio will output either. A work around is to connect your iPod to your VCR if you actually have a VCR connected to your HDTV. This is the best solution of which I can think. One thing I have done is connect the video out from my camera to the TV and connect the audio out from the iPod to the TV. I keep the camera lens closed, and I can listen to music from the iPod. It's not a good solution, but it works.

Ive just spent days trying to solve this problem. Ive got an Ipod touch(2nd gen), Samsung TV and a component cable. When playing vids I got both images and sound but as soon as I wanted to just listen to my music and the TV failed to detect video signal - it closed off the component input displaying "no signal".

Its not ideal but if you have the official Component cable and a surround sound set up you should find enough cable to connect the audio cables to the Line in on your surround sound and the video feed back up to the tv.

Im pleased to report I can now enjoy my full library through my home theatre and watch the videos on my big screen tv.

    Hope its of some help.

Yep same here. No audio on Samsung tv from component cables unless a video source is detected by the tv. Here's a workaround - altho it's not ideal... You need to fool the tv into thinking there is a video signal while playing music. To do this, play a slideshow (even tho you may not want to play one), and set slideshow settings to play current track. Not ideal 'cos the music stops if you exit the slideshow, but the music will play through your tv as long as the slideshow plays. A better solution is to connect the audio cables to external speakers 'cos tv speakers aren't that great. Hope this helps.

Here's what you do. Open up some image editing program and make an image that is completely black and put that picture on your iPod. Then under slideshow settings, set the music to "Now Playing." Start playing a song and then start a show with just the black picture.

I also own a Samsung TV and I can play videos (with sound) on my gen 1 iPod Touch through my component cable without any problems, but when it comes to playing just music it does not work! Has anyone talked to Samsung about this yet? Do they have any solutions?

There is no solution. The TV is programmed to ignore the imput if there is no video. Buy a stereo and hook your iPod up to that, or follow the instructions in my earlier post.

Actually a way to use this idea, is just plug the audio R/L cord into the input jack on your cable or directv box, assuming most people have one... that's what I did. The reason I wanted to do this is because I have Bose surround sound speakers that are hooked up to my TV, but don't have any other input plugins, but I wanted to be able to play music through them wirelessly. So, I'm using the TV and cable box as intermediaries haha.
