Printing a Poster Size picture

Hi,

I printed out a poster of one photo (20x 30) at 300 resolution. It came out ok, but lost definition. Should I have printed it at 600 dpi? How do you know what resolution to choose? Incidently, I sent it to Apple to print.

Help!

The resolution has to be in the file beforehand. How was the picture created and at what resoltuion? Once created the only way to increase the resolution, dpi, is to print a smaller size picture than the file was originally.

Dear Old Toad,

The picture was brought into iPhoto from a DVD processed by a camera store. In iPhoto the picture was saved as a PDF. Next it was taken into PhotoShop elements where it was changed to a 300DPI image and saved as a jpeg. It was put back into iPhoto and sent to Apple's photo store. I really appreciate your help!
