Real-time Network Speed Check

I have the new Time Capsule and have the 5ghz network setup. On my Windows system, my network connection fluctuates from 56mbps to 180mbps. On my Mac, it says a constant 270 in Network Utility. Is there a way, like Windows where it says, Signal Strength Strong and shows you real time numbers of your connection speed, on the Mac? Is there a way to check my wireless internet speed?

Thanks!

Hi again

Activity Monitor inside /Applications/Utilities can help you with this. launch it and click on the network tab. Still, to measure the actual speed you need to initiate a transfer of some sort. I cannot say anything about the way windows shows network speed, as I rarely use windows and therefore its workings are mostly unknown to me, but I would guess a correct measurement would too require some sort of file transfer.

Back to Activity monitor. In the network tab you will see a few stats. What would be of use to you is the "Data received / sec", "Data sent / sec" and the "Peak" measurement above the graph. Another widget that shows network speet is iStat pro.

The 270 Mbps is the theoretical maximum of the type of wireless network you have. One way to measure actual speed is to transfer a file from your computer to time capsule and measure the time it takes for the transfer to complete. With the internet things are a bit shadier. Your actual speed depends on a number of factors that cannot be counted as constants: the number of users on the exchange, your distance from it, the quality of your line, the quality of the cables used to connect you to the exchange. There are a number of web based speed checkers that will give you some speed measurement, which is usually inaccurate. One not so bad is http://speedtest.net. It uses the nearest server to where you are, which makes its measurements a bit more accurate. The best test would be to download a file from a server near your area but even this may produce inaccurate results depending, of course, on the work load of the server or the number of users in the exchange at the time of the test.
