Garageband is piece of trash?

What is up with this program????
Everytime I try to run it, it just hangs... It just sits there being stupid in the Dock. Nothing I could do except try to restart the app and hope it works.
I have had this problem from DAY 1 I installed Leo
I now have iLife 09 and it's the same stupid problem!!!
It feels like Windows all over again.
And no, I don't have incompatible AU's. Logic Pro is running very nice on this system.
Sometimes it opens though (on rare occasions), but most of the time it hangs when starting up the app.
this is not funny because I use a macintosh
WHAT TO DO ????

I use it a lot (GB '09) as well as Logic too. It's not the program dude - it's something in your configuration (software I bet). Create a second user account and log in - see if it runs. Also repair permissions too. Maybe we can help you figure this out. For every ONE person that has issues there are literally 1000's of satisfied users running it.

Thanks a lot fella's. I think it might be hardware related then because the issue is present since day 1 and hardware was first :--)... Although it's weird that everything works except for Garageband. Correction, not everything works.. Because since only recently I have a Finder Spring-Load problem. Sometimes spring-load doesnt work until i restart osx or disable and enable spring-load again.. I have this problem since 10.5.5, I believe.

Thanks again for your help. I will try some troubleshooting later this week. In the mean time, if anyone knows a solution to the spring-load problem, I am all ears :--)

Have you tried trashing both GB preferences and then repairing permissions? That often solves a lot of problems.

I recently had a mystery problem not solved by that and was able to fix it by completely uninstalling GB and reinstalling it again, which wasn't that much of a hassle. If it comes to that:

• trash GB receipts (at the hard drive level)
• trash both GB preferences (at the user level)
• trash your caches folder (at the user level - it will grow back)

Then reinstall GB from the original disk (uncheck other applications, although make sure to check that you want to install all the GB content). Repair permissions for good luck - and voila.

If you're running Logic, there's no reason why GB shouldn't also run fine - they're based on the same fundamental audio engine.

One other thought is if you're running Melodyne - I believe an older version of it sometimes messes things up.

It looks like after every Apple or app update something needs repairing. I am getting a little fed up with this kind of thing. The user has to check where the problem is, delete plists and more. Isn't this something the update itself should take care of? Apple is going the windows way.
And it also looks like Apple hasn't fixed the bugs in GB. It takes time to know whether something that doesn't work as advertised is just the usual installation hitch, which come thirteen in a dozen, or a bug.

I personally never have any of these problems and same with the majority of users. There are things to do that can help the people that have problems. A few things like repair permissions before a major os upgrade or do a fresh install, have a separate account for processor intensive apps, make sure if you install other audio apps they don't conflict with garageband, logic, don't install drivers that conflict with core audio, read the help pages.

I do tech support for a school system. We have hundreds of Macs to support and have very few problems with software Mac or PC of course we only install new software that we're sure of or from Apple.

Are you here to get help from fellow users, or complain about your malaise with Apple's imperfections?

If it's the latter, there are better places to discuss that than here.

Generally, if you're looking for a quick answer, it's to jump ahead around 20 years. At this point, in order to push the envelope, problems arise. Most people would rather face the prospect of having to trash a plist, than having the rate of innovation slow to a crawl.

If you can wade it out, my guess is in 20 years you wont have to trash a plist or repair permissions. But if you want a recording studio in 2009 that has more capabilities than were available to the Beatles, and for free with your computer, then how bad is it really to have to trash a plist or repair permissions from time to time?

Reinstalling the OS is something I am not planning to do. I have bought a mac because I never wanted to do that again.
I deleted some files and opened GB again and now it seems to be working but the question is for how long

If it works, it is a very nice application. It has very neat little features that I haven't seen in other audio applications. Apple should transfer these features to Logic Pro. Like pitching a separate note, arrangement blocks and other neat little handy things.. GB '09 is simple but very powerful (if it boots up)
