I have had the same issue, as soon as any moisture gets on the headphone controls I can no longer adjust the volume. Apple is sending me a complete replacment, I am not sure why as I only need the headphone but ok I will go with it.

I use this for running so if this happens again I may need to return it for good and that would be sad.

My 3rd. Gen shuffle has suffered from all the symptoms described here. Being a runner & sweating at that, this is a deal breaker. Just came back from the Apple store where the headphones were replaced, no questions asked. The earphones provided have a built-in mic & the coating around the jack is different. Short & stubby instead of elongated. Will try the "ipod condom" on tomorrows run- saran wrap over the volume controls or the "loop"

I'm having the same issue. I bought the shuffle just for my running and this is a definite dealbreaker for me

THIS PROBLEM IS REPORTED FIXED AS OF 4/23/09 BY APPLE PRODUCT ENGINEERS. DOWNLOAD SHUFFLE SOFTWARE VERSION 1.0.2 FROM ITUNES FOR THE FIX.

I've been in regular contact over the past three weeks with two Apple engineers assigned to helping to resolve this known issue. They emailed me today the following message:

"Just an FYI... the 1.0.2 software for the Third Gen iPod Shuffle has been released, and should resolve the issue that you are having. ( There's been changes in how it handles the volume ramping)"

I'm on my 3rd (and hopefully final) 3rd Gen Shuffle. First two had issues with sweat/moisture during running. Volume would go loud (max), then to nothing - after drying out would work for a while and then the problem repeated. With my last Shuffle which I obtained at the Apple Store as a replacement, I did three things to get it to work - and after numerous runs and hours of usage - IT DOES WORK; 1) create drip loop in right earbud wire just below earbud before the remote switch, 2) clip upside down so switch and earphone jack are facing the ground and 3) MOST IMPORTANT - download update version 1.0.2 software for the Shuffle 3rd Gen when syching to iTunes.

I have the exact same problem. 30 minutes in the volume shoots up and then way down, and finally my iPod shuffle goes catatonic.

I'm going to the Apple store and demand a refund. If they only agree to replace it, then I'm going to go back and get a replacement everday until they go bankrupt.

Honestly, why are they offering replacements when they, surely, know that every iPod suffle is defective?

I think I replied to you in another topic, but I downloaded the most recent software update and it didn't fix the problem.

Software updates just can't fix hardware flaws.

If it is a hardware problem, which based upon my own findings it appears to be (i.e. remote control casing design defect can't handle moisture leading to the volume and erratic control issues stated in this thread), then I completely concur with you. I've written the Apple engineers that have been in contact with me to this fact and pointed them directly to this forum and thread for evidence. For whatever, reason, my 3rd new 3Gen Shuffle is still working (with 1.0.2 upgrade, drip loop and clipping with controls down).

Ya I've heard of the 'knot' trick and the up-side-down trick, however, I don't condone such 'duck-tape' approaches.

I was at Apple today and they said they haven't heard of any problems. I'd like to show them this site. I thought this forum was started by Apple. Don't they ever look at it?

Thank God I'm not the only one with this problem! I bought the shuffle just for the gym and workouts but it's completely useless cos it stops working after 20-30 minutes. Has happened all the three times i've tried to use it in while working out.

Tomorrow I'll set the volume with its own headphone controller and use my other iphone headphone to listen with. So I'll lose control over which songs I want to hear but if it doesn't conk out then at least I'll have gotten it work in some way.

They will but you just have no control over the songs, playlists, volume, etc.

Nice to know that it was not just me with this problem. Other than setting the volume and wrapping the control in plastic, any word on solutions?
