emailing .m4a files

Hi,

I want to email a song as an .m4a to someone who is not particularly computer savvy. I feel certain that in the past I've attached songs to emails such that what appeared in the body of the email was a graphic with a Play button, possibly a Volume slider, and a Playhead position line. Was this a Quicktime file?

(As it is, when I attach the file, I get the graphic of the file... which, when clicked on, opens ITunes and plays the song there.

Can anyone tell me how to get the Play graphic (and thus make it all the easier for the recipient of my email to play the file?)

Thanks very much.

I don't know if this is related to your problem, but I've noticed an odd bug in this feature: normally, an email containing an mp3 or m4a will display as you described- with a little quicktime-like play slider. BUT, if the email includes my signature (which contains a small graphic file) then the audio file is just displayed as an attachment which must be clicked to play. It will open whatever App is set up to play that file type- the default is Itunes for m4a, and quicktime for mp3. Also, my signature graphic displays as an attachment as well. So, one attachment= no problem, two attachments= displays as file attachments. Hope this helps.

Thanks both of you for the responses. Unfortunately, I still can't get the QT graphic to appear in the email.

Larry, while I've previously had the attached .mp4 show up in the emails as the desired QT graphic, it definitely did not involve any .mov files; and I see how the Apple-I suggestion works in Finder, but I'm trying to avoid having the person I send the email have to save the attachment and then play it from Finder.

And Michael, I've tried attaching the .m4a to emails both containing and not containing anything else... and the result in both attempts was the non-QT file.

I'm sure I can talk my friend through one means or another to play the song, but the QT graphic makes it so easy... and the fact that I somehow achieved it by default previously, and now can't...
is a mystery.

Anyway, thanks again!

Well, no, Apple-I only shows information about the file. It doesn't change anything until you do. My point was, you can open that and it will show you something that says "Open With" and you can pick Quicktime as the default application to open it, which should carry over to the other computer you are sending it to. You can't play anything in Finder that I'm aware of- maybe the little preview.

If you are really wanting a .mov file, then make the .mp4 be one by converting it to one, and any Quicktime player in the world should open it. You can also download this, which is a great program for converting video files among its other strengths:

Using this, I don't see why you can't make a .mov file, which I would then compress into a .zip file (which the Mac OS can do for you) and then FTP it, I use this:

If you are really having trouble with this, I'll give you my email address, and you can send me the file- I do a bit of this sort of thing. Let me know.

It seems like your are making this process seem a lot harder than it actually is!

Simply upload the file you want to a host such as zshare, soundcloud etc and send the link in the email saying "click on this"!

When your friend clicks on the link they will be directed to the file and it will play automatically, with an option to download.

This sounds far easier than what you want to do IMHO and i'm pretty sure anyone who can open an email will know how to click on a link!

Thanks again to all of you for your helpful replies! There's certainly one
among all the suggestions that I can use to do what I want.

I completely agree with you tobacco_slammers that I'm making much ado about this issue, but I suppose I'd moved on from the particular need of the moment to trying to fathom (as angelonyc aptly terms it) this life mystery...
