Mac Pro sometimes displays static after displays wake up from sleep

Twice already when waking my two displays from sleep, the primary display will show just colored static, not the login window. The external display seems fine and shows just a blank screen. If I type in my password, the static goes away and the primary display shows the desktop. I can't reproduce the problem... it just happens (so far, infrequently).

I recently upgraded from an older Intel Mac Pro to a stock Early 2009 Mac Pro with 2 x 2.26 Quad-Core Xeon using the same two displays (a 19" Samsung and a 24" Dell) I had before. The 19" Samsung is connected via a mini displayport to DVI adapter and the 24" Dell is connected via DVI and is the primary display. My Mac never sleeps; only the displays sleep and I have it configured to require a password when waking from sleep or screen saver. I also have the Flurry screen saver enabled.

I basically unplugged my old Mac Pro and plugged in my new Mac Pro to my existing setup (displays, network, keyboard, mouse). This never happened with my old Mac Pro so I doubt that it's a problem with the 24" Dell (unless it's a huge coincidence that it started happening after I upgraded).

I want to reiterate that the 24" display is NOT connected via the mini displayport to DVI adapter, but through the DVI port. This problem happened once yesterday and once today and I've had the new Mac since Monday. I'd say my displays go to sleep about 6 times a day since I go in and out of my office often. The problem has yet to happen when I wake up the display first thing in the morning.

OK, just let the machine do the OS X 10.6.3 update.

The machine booted up with BOTH displays. That is different, and a positive change.

Wake from sleep wasn't as successful. Both displays awoke with static. I've tried this a few times with the same results.

Another positive change is this: When there is static on the monitors, a single power cycle seems to bring them back to life. This is different than the 1 to 6 or more times I would have to cycle the power before I could get them back.

OK, bring on 10.6.4! Perhaps this will fix the issue once and for all... Just as I'm ready to upgrade to the newest Mac Pro, or whatever. 🙂

I spoke too soon. A second reboot took me right back to square-one. Primary display comes up ok, and the second is static. sigh

I have a 27" iMac with the i7 processor and I have an attached 20" Acer monitor connected by a DVI to Mini DisplayPort adaptor. I did not have this issue while using a borrowed VGA to Mini DisplayPort adaptor. The rainbow static only occurs on the Acer monitor. I previously had the Acer monitor connected to my Mac Mini through a DVI cable so I know the DVI port on the monitor is functional.

Same issue for me with ATI card. Computer works fine, the display goes to sleep, I move the mouse to "wake" it, and I get the static noise. If I power off the monitor and back on, it works again, but I can't do that since I have an external drive connected to the monitor. If I leave the static on the screen for a few minutes, it resolves itself and the computer works fine again.

I have a Dell 2307 connected via DVI to my Mac Pro.

I have a new 6-core and a 23" Samsung monitor hooked up via DVI. I get white snow/static when the MP goes to sleep. If I turn the monitor on and off again the screen comes back.

My question is, does this happen with the 27" ACD? I have one on order and plan on taking back this Samsung. Has anyone got in touch with Apple regarding this issue? What have they said? Will a solution be a firmware update?

Ok same here, here's what I found. To be honest I thought it was a problem with my monitor as my 23" sync master would always do it, but my 22" Soyo would not. Today I got a new 23" HP monitor and it happens as well on both at the same time. I have an Nvidia 8800GT on my computer and both monitors are connected via DVI. This only happens when I boot to SL. If I force my displays to sleep (ctrlshifteject) and wait a few minutes I will get white snow (same if i let it turn itself off). If i force them to go black and quickly wake them I never get static. When experiencing static If i change inputs on the monitors or turn them off and on the static will go away, not the end of the world, just really annoying.

Hi!

I have a Mac pro mid 2010 (12 core, 16gb Ram, Snow leopard 10.6.4, Ati HD 5870).
2x Dell Wfp2408 Ultrasharp.

I tried to connect both but static noise appear in the monitor that need conversion from Apple minidisplay port. I had tried with single link Dvi cable + dual Link DVI to Apple Mini DisplayPort official adapter, but i had static noise. I was thinking that maybe with a Dual Link DVI cable i could solve this problem, so i got a Dual dvi cable + dual link DVI to Apple mini display port official adapter and...... the same problem, static noise appear..... i thought that maybe could be a problem with Dell revision of monitor i have one monitor older than other and I thought change its conections and...... static noise appear on the other monitor!!!.... later i thought that something with conversion from DVI to minidisplay port are wrong... 100€ for apple dual link Dvi to minidisplay port and dont work!!!

Dell display have a display port input... and Ati minidisplay port output.... well i thought that a Display port cable to minidisplay port cable could work, so i had bought this http://estore.circuitassembly.com/products/Mini-Displayport-to-Displayport-Adapt er-Cable.html and VOILA! no more static noise!!! problem SOLVED!

There are people with expensive apple dual link dvi to minidisplay port converter had connected a dvi display without static noise problems?

Last thing i have a Macbook pro mid 2009 and a samsung display (Syncmaster 245e) and with apple simple adapter from minidisplay port to dvi i had had same issues

something with minidisplay port to dvi are not standard from apple. Not work.

I did not have this issue with the 2600HD but I upgraded to a 5770 and now I get the static and I seem to have fixed mine. So my main screen would show white noise every time I came out of sleep mode. I did not have a screen saver just the power saving sleep after 10mins. So I turned on my screen saver at 10mins and power saver at 15 mins and the static has not occurred since(5 sleep cycles).
