Continuous charge?

with the Li-Ion batteries in the iPhone it is best to charge them as often as possible to keep them working well as they have no memory effect like earlier generation batteries, most people recommend discharging them once a month or so, but this is mainly so the iPhone can calibrate itself again to know what is "full" and what is "empty" but otherwise plug in whenever and wherever it is convenient the only downsides to Li-Ion is that they cannot be fully discharged as this does damage the battery and if done cannot be recovered from which is why the iPhone and in fact all modern phones that use Li-Ion technology will power off when the battery reaches a certain level (about 5%) as all Li-Ion batteries have a controller built in to prevent over-charging and over-discharging and why if you buy say normal AA style Li-Ion batteries they require a special charger (The controllers also the reason that Li-Ion batteries are more expensive even though the battery material itself tends to be cheaper. Oh and in regard to what it does while plugged in, the controller charges the battery to 100% then runs straight off mains power while gradually discharging the battery till it hits 95% then tops up again and so on and so forth ad infinitum to keep the battery cells active all the time
