Making new icons in taskbar

I was hoping someone could give me advice! I have an icon for downloads in my taskbar at the bottom of my computer, and I am trying to add an icon for My Documents. However, when I try to drag the icon from it's location on the hard drive, it makes a poof (there actually is a poof with it) when I let the key go and then it disappears. I know this must be easier than I am making it! Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions!

From your description, it seems to me you're trying to drag the "Documents" from the side bar rather than the contents of your home folder. Click on the icon that looks like a home on the left-hand "side bar". This will display all the folders inside your home directory. Drag the Documents folder from the right-hand side into the Dock (taskbar). You can also drag the Documents folder back into the side bar as well. Note, applications appear on the left-hand side of the Dock and documents & folders can only appear on the right-hand side of the Dock.
