CD controls remain grayed out, as if no media exists. Different CDs result in same effect.

I have scoured the web and Apple forums. Please suggest a solution.

I'm also wondering why I am not an administrator, since I am an administrator under OS.

I have a similar situation....8.1 recognizes my cds, but when importing them the speed is incredibly slow...0.1x????? 8.0 had NO problem with speed or either of my drives. I've tried the diagnostics, re-installing, changing quality and a system restore all to no avail. I REALLY wish apple would offer retro-grades to the software to use until the bugs are fixed...i really should have known better, every time i upgrade something apple related on my home PC, IT NEVER WORKS CORRECTLY!! SOMEONE HELP ME!!

I agree with Rick. I've converted a couple CDs with Windows Media and imported them, but being a fella who really doesn't care for workarounds, it just seemed a bit redundant. I'll just hold off on converting cd's until it's resolved, I guess? I just can't believe a stupid update can screw up the most basic portion of the software? Isn't converting to mp3 at least a third of the point of iTunes?

SOLVED!

As suspected, my problem of not being able to play or import CD from iTunes 8.1 was internal to iTunes (with a little help from me). iTunes does not recognize the drive letters of A: or B: I wanted the drive letter configuration of my computer to be C:SYSTEM and D:DATA, so I changed the optical drive to A: just like the old floppy drives used to be. (Going old school.) Since iTunes will not accept that, I changed the drive letter of the optical drive to O: (for optical) and everything works.

To do this, go CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM AND MAINTENANCE>ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS>COMPUTER MANAGEMENT>STORAGE>DISK MANAGEMENT. All your drives should be laid out in front of you. (If your optical drive isn't listed, you might have to insert a disk and from the menu bar select ACTION>REFRESH.) Left click on your optical drive to select it and then right click on Change Drive Letter and Paths... Select Change, enter any unused drive letter greater than B: (D: is common by default, O: seemed to work) and OK your way out of it.

Changing my drive letters has probably left me open to problems from other programs that don't taken drive letter flexibility into account, but iTunes works for me.

I am e-mailing this to the Apple tech who tried unsuccessfully to help me, placing suspicion on everything except the coding of iTunes. Hopefully, Apple will put this in their knowledge base, because it seems to be a common problem and few know the solution.
