Delete albums from iPhoto but not from Facebook?

When iphoto uploads photos to Facebook, it creates an album in iPhoto mirroring the Facebook album. Is there a way to remove this album from iPhoto, but keep the album on Facebook?

No - as noted in the tutorials and else where the album on Facebook and in iphoto are kept in sync - change either and you change the other the same way - if you do not want that then use the traditional method to upload and manage Facebook (and MobileMe and Flickr) albums

The whole concept of albums linked to iPhoto is that they are -- well linked -- to iPhoto and are kept in sync

Hey tekp

I was about to ask the same question, but something just came to me. You could try unauthorizing the iphoto to facebook connection from within facebook, the gallery should remain but now iPhoto shouldn't have the power to make any changes.

I realize this might not be a good solution, but it's the only one I have right now. If it does work, please let me know. I also think this might work for flickr integration but again, I haven't tried it yet.

Let me know if that works.

WHAT????

Wait a minute......is Apple serious? This is madness!!!!

My wife just lost a ton of Facebook albums...gone...disappeared....because she "offloaded" a bunch of her iPhoto pictures to DVD, to clear off hard drive space. She used the Facebook/iPhoto link to upload the photos originally in the first place because it was the simplest way to upload photos. There was no warning that "if you delete your iPhoto photos, you will lose your Facebook album"!!

So are we basically saying that anyone who uses the Facebook/iPhoto linking system is, at some point, sooner or later, doomed to lose their Facebook photo albums? What if your iPhoto library gets corrupted? What if you buy a new Mac? Are they seriously suggesting that people have to keep photos on their hard drives ad infinitum? People who have tons of photos on their laptop hard drives have to keep them there if they've uploaded to Facebook via the linking system?

Why can there not be a "de-sync" option?

I'm just staggered at the thought of this....how many people out there, like my wife, have tons of photos on Facebook via iPhoto sync, and are unaware that when they lose or delete those photos (as they inevitably will at some point), those Facebook albums will disappear?

Before someone says "well you should've just uploaded them the old way", hey, come on--the whole selling point of iPhoto is "upload your photos to Facebook at the click of a button! It's all integrated!"

Crazy 😟

Correct - and that is why removing them from either Facebook or iPhoto removes them from the other one - because "it's all integrated"

That is the way it works - if you do not want that use something

If you want Apple to modify the specs then notify Apple of your desires - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback

Yes, I realize that now, but does no one else find it ridiculous that there is no way to disable the iPhoto/Facebook album integration once it's been set up? I never even gave it a second thought, because when my wife originally set up all her Facebook albums via iPhoto and the neat handy Facebook button, I never would have possibly imagined that there would be NO way to disable that sync. That is incredible!

Again--that's a time bomb waiting to happen. My wife is not a computer illiterate, and she was bitten by this behaviour and lost tons of her Facebook albums, months after installing iPhoto '09. I can't even begin to imagine how many people uploaded their photos to Facebook from iPhoto using that button, never giving a second thought to how, down the road, at some point, maybe months/years from now, if they somehow erase those photos from iPhoto, or if they delete/recreate their Facebook account, those photos will be GONE in the corresponding application as well.

Apple--PLEASE give us an option to de-sync!!!!

OK....this is madness.

I just looked back at iPhoto 09's help page about publishing to Facebook. There is NO mention of the consequences of publishing via the Facebook button. It simply says this: "To publish your photos from iPhoto to Facebook, click the Facebook button." Wheee!! Easy enough. That's what my wife read, and that's what she did. But the page fails to mention, "Oh, and by the way--once you've done that, those published photos and their corresponding Facebook album are now INEXTRICABLY LINKED, and there is no way to break that link, forever"!!!

This is absolutely astounding to me. Does no one out there have a wife or mother who has already been burned by this??

i totally agree about the madness. I uploaded over 300 photos using the handy little button, to find that half of them have been changed/deleted b/c of what i did in my iPhoto. I'm definitely going to write to apple about this... but i did find that you can transfer all your photos in facebook and make them not be connected to iphoto anymore. just go to facebook and create a new album then move all the photos you dont want connected to iphoto to the new album. that old album will now be empty and you can delete it then go and delete the facebook upload album in your iphoto. i tested this method by changing one of the photos, but the moved photo in facebook wasnt changed. its a bit of work, but it at least lets you keep stuff... 🙂

1 - it pays to learn - the tutorial clearly states that the iPhoto gallery and the facebook gallery are fully synced - items are added, removed and modified in both places

2 - if you do not want synced galleries then simply do not use the iPhoto upload but use the face book plug in or directly upload form a browser

i do have to agree with canadave that this is not thoroughly thought through by apple. it's not that black and white, even if tutorial states about synchronization. we are human, and error is human and apple is usually quite good about these kind of things. not making me think nor suffer too much. there are quite a few if's and what if's, that should also be taken into account.

i changed my laptop and i had to move a lot of photos from my HD and these photos where deleted from both my flickr and facebook accounts. which was a bummer of course.

i DO want to keep my photos synced with flickr and iphoto but there are occasions when i don't want iphoto to delete photos — without confirmation at least.

i was extremely happy about the sync feature as i've been using both flickr and iphoto for years. i used flickr uploader in the past, then after 15k photos the obvious problem was that i wasn't sure anymore which photos are in flickr and iphoto or vice verse. now i've turned automatic syncing off and put iphoto library to external drive since i have to be able to use on multiple computers.

yes, i should have read the manual more carefully, but with apple i'm used to that i don't have to. my bad.

I came across this dilemma because I had 20+ "events" sync'd to facebook from my macbook pro after a trip overseas, but I wanted to move the base photo's to my home iMac when I got home.

WORKAROUND:
This may not be a solution, but as a workaround (as another poster suggested), you CAN click settings once you have a Facebook album highlighted in iPhoto, and deauthorise / remove the facebook identity from iPhoto.

From here, you can DELETE the iPhoto "facebook" albums, and it leaves the online version AND the original iPhoto event is still there too.

This method leaves the Facebook album intact, but any future changes need to be made in Facebook, and won't be reflected in iPhoto (or vice versa)

Hope this helps someone....
(looking forward to more sophisticated "link/unlinking" options in the future!)
