Samba connection lost, RESTART required - is there a gentler way?

I leave my Mac overnight at work at lot while it's running some remote jobs and also connected to a linux box via the corporate Samba network. Every time I come back to my Mac the following morning the Samba connection is lost and I can't save off the results. Presumably this is because of some period of inactivity - all day long while I'm using the Mac the Samba connection is robust. I've tried quitting the Finder, unplugging and replugging the ethernet connector, logging out and logging back in again. The only thing that allows me to reconnect to Samba is a full restart. Is there some Terminal command that I can enter to kick Samba in the pants so I can then do a fresh Connect to Server without restarting (and losing most of the work accomplished overnight)?

I have a similar issue when networking to a Windows box.
Try this:
In Sharing, turn off SMB, click OK and wait. I usually wait a few minutes.
Then turn it back on and wait a little longer.

Can't say whether it will work for you but it works 100% of the time with XP when I lose the Workgroup filesharing connection.
It's better than rebooting or even logging out/in.
