can't connect canon mp620

I'm a recent switcher and have been reading with great interest the problems others are having connecting the canon mp620 wireless. I don't have a router..I just want to have the printer/copy/scanner(mp620)talk to my mac wireless. One of my specific problems is my lack of mac knowledge...pc user 15+ yrs...if someon, when explaining the steps, please tell me how and where to access certain information eg username/password etc. I will be very grateful...currently I am configured via usb cable...I intend only to have the 620 approx 5 feet from the mac...btw...my wireless keyboard and mouse were cinches to hook up this has been frustrating...many thanks to all in advance

Hi river rance, and a warm welcome to the forums! 🙂

Does Cannon have setup tools to set the Wireless IP, that's what you need to talk to it Wirelessly, though, it just may show up under the Airport Icon, not sure.

Then open Printer Setup Utility and ADD new Printer, look for something like Canon IP, or Canon IJ once you've installed the Printer Drivers, or set it up with an IP.

Hi BDAqua,
It shows a router, I don't have a router...just looking to go wireless from computer to printer. Also, I feel a bit helpless in my new enviorment, after spending 15+ on the PC side. If I have to enter the numbers or configure, I'm sorry but will need specific info as I don't know my way around the mac platform just yet...and a big thanks so far for your help.

OOPs, that IP is from your Modem and I'll ask it be edited out because it's your Outside IP, so don't be shocked or dismayed! 🙂

Also, I feel a bit helpless in my new enviorment, after spending 15+ on the PC side.

Don't worry, somebody here can help I'm certain of that, not too sure of myself though!

BTW, I think if the student doesn't learn, it's the Teacher's fault, not the Student's! 😉

I've never done this without a Router, but I doubt your Printer's IP starts with the same 3 IP numbers, nor do I think it would help if it did.

If we can find the IP of the Printer we may find a workaround.

We need to find your Cann setup Utility to find out or setup te Printer.

Might try the Apple icon up top left>About this Mac>More info>Hardware>Printers, then see if it is listed, and if it shows an IP.

It is setup as a USB Printer, no Wireless will work on that one.

I'd delete that one and see if Printer Setup Utility has a listing under More Printers for something like CanonBJ Network and try that.

Also, in System Preferences>Sharing, turn off the Firewall for these tests.

I'm fairly certain there must be something like Canon IJ Network Tool to set the IP on the Printer too.

Hello river,

From reading your postings I get the impression that you are trying to connect the MP620 directly to the Mac via wireless. By that I mean that there is no wireless access point (some kind of wireless router providing the wireless service) in between your Mac and the MP620. Would this be the case?

If it is, then this cannot be done. This is known as ad-hoc mode and the Canon printer does not support this type of wireless network connection. For it to work, there must be a wireless router on your network.

An Airport Express will set you back about US$99 but you could also look at D-Link and Netgear for cheaper wireless routers.

To confirm what BDAqua wrote, once the printer is connected to a wireless router, which you have to perform via a USB connection first, the network printer queue is added via More Printers > Canon IJ Network.

To get the Canon IJ Network option to appear in the More Printers menu, you need to install the IJ Network Tool, which is a separate installer to the printer driver. You can download the utility from here;
