Dial-up via Bluetooth no longer works and disconnects forever

Using bluetooth to a Nokia phone to get internet access over O2 GPRS. Worked a couple of weeks ago. Doesn't work now. The modem status shows connecting for a few seconds then disconnecting forever. What has changed? Any idea where to look next?

Thanks,
Richard

I have also used Bluetooth DUN with a Verizon Palm Centro on Mac OS 10.5.6. When it works it's fairly good. When it doesn't work I see the following symptoms, which ALWAYS require a warm (Apple menu) or hard (power switch) restart.

* "Disconnecting" displayed endlessly
* "Connecting" displayed endlessly
* RFComm failure displayed on every attempt to connect

I have found a 3rd party bluetooth DUN script that seems to work better (so far but time will tell) than the ghastly one that's packed in with Mac OS X (generic Verizon EV-DO) - that script seems to be most effective at returning modem connection errors of some kind and hanging the machine after enough failures. The failures and hangs are sometimes so frequent that establishing a connection would be considered an "abnormal operation."

It may be just the menu bar that's affected, in which case a soft restart will work. If the UI on the menu bar freezes, however, the entire UI begins to freeze, and it's impossible to restart the machine without using the power button.

This seems to be associated with pppd hanging in an unkillable state. (Thank you SO much Apple for bring back the unkillable process. I've missed it (NOT) since it went away in the 1980s for almost every other U*ix-like operating system.

A 3rd party recommendation is:

* Unload the bluetooth i/o module while retaining the personality (seems to work)
* This has the effect of deleting the bluetooth cu devices
* Stop the blued service (this now works)
* Restart the blue service (this now works)

Unfortunately the cu devices are not, contrary to other reports, recreated. I don't know how to force them to be recreated and I don't know how to do that manually, because the inner workings of Darwin are somewhat alien to me.

I'd love to have a script that I could use to get bluetooth/pppd/dun shut down and restarted properly.

I'd love even more to have a patch that fixes this problem. Why on earth can't pppd shut its freakin self down when the dialer decides that the connection is broken? And why on earth does it cause freezes of the ENTIRE UI? Even in the days of DUN on SunOS this never happened! We have made 20 years of backward progress. W*F APPLE?!??!

I'm using a three skypephone, not a Nokia.
I set up a ppp connection with ease but I experience frequent disconnection form my provider. Trying to reconnect I frequently have to hard reboot because the UI gets frozen (while the modem status on the menu bar keeps showing "Disconnecting" forever).

I thought a better ppp script could handle this better.

Thank you

I have the same issues using my Sony Ericsson W580i. I'm on the AT&T Network and connecting with Bluetooth DUN via Apple's interface (no third party). At times it connects just fine, though I've found that if I try to push too much information (loading a page with video for example) the connection remains active, but no information is dl/ul. It hangs.

Where the real trouble comes in is that when disconnecting and reconnecting, or reconnecting on a spontaneous disconnect, I'll get a scrolling ticker which perpetually displays "disconnecting" while greying out any and all options. The ticker scroll won't go away without a reset. When trying to do a soft reset, the computer hangs at the Blue Screen without ever completely shutting down, necessitating a hard reset in any condition.

Other times, when connecting the same issue arises, but with "connecting" scrolling in the ticker area and greying out all other options.

It would seem there's no resolution to this issue as this is the 4th thread I've come across, the first dating back to 2007, and the issues are still the same. I just wanted to throw my hat in the ring and say "Apple! Fix it!"
