barcode scanning and keyboard AZERTY

I'm stuck with following problem:
In Belgium we use AZERTY-keyboard in stead of QWERTY.
My barcode scanner( http://www.posdata.nl/productinfo.php?productsid=53) only works correctly if i set my keyboard setting to QWERTY.

If i use AZERTY i get &é"'(§è!çà in stead of 1234567890.
How can i still use AZERTY and have the correct numbers scanned with my barcode scanner?

iMacG5, Mac OS X (10.5.6), 4 macs and a printer

Strange that it works under windows-emulation (VMware) but doesn't on Mac.

We've narrowed the problem down, but still puzzled since it works on windows and not on mac.
You have to program the barcodescanner with a sequence "ALT" to make it work.
However, it only works on windows (emulated with VMWare).

I'm surprised with the windows which gives the correct result.
I must be missing something very trivial.

It might have something to do with the input settings of the root or administrator user. If that user is not set to azerty input (via language and input menu in international settings), then it might be that the barcode reader is merrily scanning in QWERTY settings.

I would look for all things localized. Try the terminal to see what input you get. There is a locale and localedef in the terminal too.
