Skipped frames when importing into iMovie

I've been importing video into iMovie from my 8mm video camera via the ADS Pyro A/V Link capture device. Every so often, it seems the video "jumps" from one point to a point one fraction of a second later, as if the frames in between just disappear. This apparently occurs during import and recurs at the same place in the video when I play it back.

How do I prevent this? Is it an issue with the processor being overtaxed? (I have a dual 1.25 GHz G4 with 512 MB RAM.)

Also, iMovie apparently starts a new clip after about 1hr-1min-30s of importation. Is this supposed to happen? I know it's only a small bother because I can just put the two clips next to each other in the Timeline, but I'm curious as to whether it will always occur.
