iphone showing "connect to itunes" image and no response

Hi,
Just purchased my new iphone and whilst installing an Apple software update from itunes, the phone suddenly hanged and afterwhich an image showing the usb cable connecting to itunes logo appeared and the phone is now not responding. Everytime I tried to switch it off and on, the same image just appears. When I connect the phone to the pc, itunes no longer activates automatically.Anyone to advise pls? Thanks

Try resetting your iPhone by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

After trying what paulcb said, and if it doesn't work, you can enter DFU mode by turning the phone off (press the sleep/wake and home buttons until the slider comes up, and slide the slider) and the phone is off. Then, press the home button, and while still holding the home button down, plug the phone into your computer.
