Question

Macbook Pro FIREWIRE Port

I went into BestBuy and asked what kind of firewire cable I needed to connect my camera to my Macbook Pro. The guy gave me a 6 pin, 4 pin firewire cable, but its too large to fit in my Macbook Pro. What type of firewire cable do I need?

Thanks! Now I know what it looks like, but does it have a specific name for the type that it is, like the 6 pin 4 pin?

Hi, HG. You need a 9-pin FireWire 800 (1394b, not 1394a) connector on one end for the MBP, and whatever your camera requires on the other.

It's generally not a good bet that anyone at Best Buy will be able to answer any question having to do with a Mac. Next time you have one, ask here first. 😉

I think the 4 pin bit is a Sony thing. They call it iLink.

The first image I showed you is wrong though. That's a FW800 connector, which you have on your MBP. Six pin is a FW400 connector. You will need a FW400 to FW800 adapter to plug that six pin to four pin cable into your MBP.

That's not necessarily true -- many Best Buys now have an Apple Computer section inside, and most of the people assigned to work in that section are Apple certified to do so.

That being said, not all Best Buys have this department (although most now do).

In reality, people SHOULDN'T be coming here first for questions like that. They should be looking at their user manual, and posting here only if they have a problem. This isn't a chat board -- it's a user to user help board. The first place people should check is what they already have -- their user manual.
