convert uppercase to lowercase and vice versa

I have been a consistent user of AppleWorks from the beginning of ClarisWorks, but since I went to Leopard 10.5.6, some features broke. I am trialling Pages '09 and I note that the "convert uppercase to lowercase and vice versa" feature which is present in AppleWorks under Font Styles, in not available in Pages '09, as well as some others. I find this frustrating as I need tools that give me lots of manipulation of the words and characters. So how is it possible to change text from uppercase to lowercase and vice versa?

p.s. I want to support Apple products.

Mac G5, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

In OSX Cocoa apps that is now handled universally by Services a form of Cocoa plug-in.

In this case get the free WordService:

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10523/wordservice

After you install this, it will appear in:

+Menu > Pages > Services > Convert and Format+

It has a total of 37 different services which appear not just in Pages but any other Cocoa app including the Finder.

WordService offers far more options for capitalisation and a range of other very useful conversions and formats.

As they all appear in menus, you are better off learning to go where you have superior choices.

Particularly when those choices have broad application across other programs and in the Finder, for example you can use WordService to take off those annoying ALLCAPS on file names.

PeterBreis0807,

I think that your suggestion was and is great. I agree that WordServices sounds wonderful, however I personally don't like to add third party apps when there are Apple equivalents. And as for what is superior that to is a matter of opinion. Nothing I can say nor you can say will change neither nor either of our opinions. Plus Automator does a wonderful job of renaming my finder items if so be the case.

I was just thinking it would be good for the other users of this forum to know some of the other available options to get the OP done. Like stated before I think that your solution is great, its just not for everyone. Please note I didn't mean to offend or step on any toes.

I wasn't taking or suggesting offense, but am pointing out that

*WordServices offers:*
All Caps
Decode Tabs
Encode Tabs
Initial Caps of Sentences
Initial Caps of Words
Lowercase
Mac to Windows encoding
Macintosh Line Endings
Rotate13
Smart Quotes
Straight Quotes
Unix Line Endings
Windows Line Endings
Windows to Mac encoding
___________
Reformat
Remove Attachments
Remove Line Endings
Remove Links
Remove Multiple Feeds
Remove Multiple Spaces
Remove Quotes
Shift Left
Shift Right
Sort Lines Ascending
Sort Lines Descending
Trim Line Beginnings
Trim Line Endings
Trim Line

And these are not all.

*Pages lacks most of these and the Capitalisation features only:*
None
All Caps
Small Caps
Title

Word Services is perfectly safe without side effects. Apple already offers a range of Services from the Services submenu, it is just that most people never look.

There is no reason to not use Services and every reason to use them.

I wish to add that there is a huge difference between the changes made by WordService and those made by the Pages's menu items.

The Pages menu items apply a style to the selected text but doesn't change the real stored string.
So, if you typed "peter breis", it will be displayed as
"PETER BREIS"
or "Peter Breis" but the file will contain "peter breis"
which has several side effects.

WordService changes the real content so, thanks to it, after typing
"peter breis", your document may really store:

"peter breis"
"Peter breis"
"Peter Breis"
"PETER BREIS"

Hello to you, and thank you so much.

This is the first time that I have had a chance to respond to my forum post.

However, I did look for a response for some time after I posted and I noted a very quick uptake to my query.

Other than saying thank you, I can't offer much in any other kind yet to this forum, until I get up to speed with Pages '09.

I did try out the WordService solution and it works just fine. So again, thank you so much.

Thank god that there are some bright sparks out there who see the opportunities, and can act on them.

Much regards

Felix Macri

Services are not third-party applications or hacks. Rather than throwing everything in an application, Apple builds the ability to create additional services in OS X, similar to the ability to create & use AppleScripts. Services are available to all applications that have the ability to access them. Saves a lot of redundancy. From the Mac Help in Leopard:

Using an application’s services
Some applications provide “services” that let you use features of that application while working in another application. For example, the Mail service in the Finder opens the Mail application so that you can email a file directly from the Finder without opening the Mail application separately.

To use an application’s services:

Select what you want to work with (such as a file or some text), and then choose the service you want to use from the application menu.

For example, to email a document on your desktop, select the file you want and then choose Finder > Services > Mail > Send File.

If the service is dimmed, you may have selected something that doesn’t work with that particular service. Try selecting something else and check the menu again.
