Archiving Video edits - zipping?

Question

Archiving Video edits - zipping?

What's the most reliable way to back up huge video files?

Normally I just buy a cheap external Hard Drive and stick the project on that, but it's getting expensive so I've got a Dual-Layer burner which I use now. But I wondered how reliable Zipping is? is this a bad idea? i would save lots of space

I have used zip in the past, but found that the compression and size reduction/time to zip and unzip were not worth it. For DV and HDV being 12-13 Gigs an hour and 1 Terrabyte drives now $90 or less, I just get hard drives.

I have not tried things other than StuffIt or create archieve/compress from the OS in awhile (I do not recall the last version of StuffIt that I tried to compress video with, though I do have the most recent version. I may try at some point, but was not worth it for me the last time. Not sure even if it made things 1/2 the size I would bother anyway with the price of hard drives.)

Keep your tapes. If you properly logged and captured your footage, then all you need to archive is your project file and any assets that were not on tape (i.e., graphics, logos, music files, etc.) This is the cheapest, most reliable way of archiving your jobs.

that's the best way I guess. Although the projects I'm archiving are very old and don't have logging on them so I guess I'll grab a hard drive. thanks
