longest movie possible?

What is the longest movie possible when using FCP, Compressor, and DVDSP?

I can get up to 6 hours on a Single Layer DVD when I copy VHS tapes on my consumer DVD/VHS combo machine. Can I get more than the 150 minutes that I see in the Compressor presets? I'd probably need to get about 4 hours onto a single layer DVD for an upcoming project.

Thanks,
Pete D.

Yep, and it looks like junk.

Ratchet down the bits per second to half of what you'd use for a 2 hr project and you can do it. You project also will look like junk.

Just curious what Warholesque video you are creating that demands an uninterupted 4 hour stream? And how are you going to ensure people don't get up and walk out after the first hour? At that point, you could have encoded the just the first two hours at a much higher quality and no one would know that you forget the rest of the material as no one would sit through it. Reminds me of the graduate student who wrote his dissertation as a 30 page diatribe, stapled another 170 pages of blank paper behind that then added the endnotes for the last 5 pages. No one noticed.

Yikes!

That's harsh... Good thing I am thick skinned... sheesh...

😎

You flatter me by mistaking me for a film maker..... I'm just making a dance recital video. Aside from the fact that Discmakers doesn't do DVD-DL short runs I've also read that BURNED DVD-DL's don't play in different machines as reliably as pressed discs....

I'm just going over options - my margins in this market make it so that a two-disc product is out of the question right now - unless I end up in a position where I truly have no choice....

any other ideas???

I agree with the other contributors that a 4 hour DVD will look like ordure to most of us.

However, it can be done quite easily in FCP and Compressor.

Though we may not be too happy with the results, 99% of the general public will probably think they are brilliant. (I sometimes wonder whether it is worth bothering with quality when I hear the comments of lay audiences - except I have to view them too!)

Well .... It's pretty much a moot point - this project has gone away, a victim of the current economy....

I wouldn't create a 4-hour FCP sequence, and unfortunately the parents of the bad performers pay just as much to see their kids as those of the good performers, so taking them out is not an option....

😎

So I guess the solution - if this were to be required - would be chunking up the FCP work, bringing the results through compressor to DVD SP as separate assets and decrementing the bit rate in DVD SP until the proper length is achieved?

Sometimes the nasty stuff just has to be done.

Thanks for the good humor, guys....
