Adding S&P 500 to stock market widget

I've been trying to find the correct abbreviation for the S&P 500 to add it to the stock market widget that came with the computer. S&P doesn't work and others give something other than the S&P index. So I checked the abbreviation for it on my itouch (where it came already installed). It is GSPC BUT there is an inverted V in front. I have no clue how to enter that and entering it without the inverted V (caret) leads me to GSPCX which isn't the S&P index. If anyone has any ideas, I'd greatly appreciate hearing them. Thanks much!
