Transitions between multiple cutaway images

I have a gap in a talking head video where the image goes blank (grey) but the audio keeps going, maybe 50 seconds. So my solution was to put in a series of cutaway still shots of the speaker during the gap.

However I cannot figure out how to manage transitions between the cutaway stills. It seems that even if I move the separate images right next to each other, when I export, the blank video pops in between images. I can't apply a transition between cutaway images (the transition insists on apply to the video track rather than the cutaways) and there is no way to select more than one cutaway at a time to join them.

Any solutions/ideas?

I understand what you're saying here, but...

I would like to bump the original question for a similar project I'm working on.

I've been wanting to put in a few successive cutaways in a row over a main video clip and keep the main clip's audio going. Whenever I try this, I get a second of the main clip flashing through inbetween the cutaways. Very annoying. Any solutions anyone knows of?

Thanks!

It's possible that you've just left a little space in between the cutaways. Drag the "frames per thumbnail" slider all the way to the left and it'll show you if there are gaps in between them.

If you've done that, the other thing that might be happening is you still have the transitions between the cutaways, and there's a brief flash of the original video that shows through during those transitions.

If you look at this video around 3:02-3:10, you'll see three cutaways I added that sound like what you're wanting to do:

I had both of those problems, so I set the middle Cutaway Fade to "None," which solved the issue for me.

Wow, Doug, at last! That is EXACTLY what I want to do! Loved the video, btw.

Three (or more) succesive video cutaways over a main video clip where the main clip's sound continues through (or even the cutaway's sound is up...?)

Anyway, you say to set the middle cutaway's fade to none? Watching the video it seems like there is a quick fade/dissolve anyway... which looks perfect.

Also, I'm sure it's simple, but... how exactly do I "drag the 'frames per thumbnail' slider all the way to the left?" I don't remember seeing a "frames per thumbnail" slider anywhere. Sorry, I'm a bit dense 🙂
