The residence hotel that we spend the winter at has just turned on a broadband network. As far as I know, I have all my network sharing prefs turned off in the Shared pref pane. I am seeing names of shared computers on the right side of my finder window. I can even see the guy's photos. Is there a way to block these other computers. What else should I do to be safe? This is on my new white MacBook.

Well there is not much you can do about other folks sharing their files with you (except not to click on their machines). To make sure that you are safe, turn off all file sharing. Only machines with file sharing enabled that are on the same local network will show up in the Finder sidebar.
