iTunes keeps opening itself

Whenever the computer is on (iMac 2GHz, OSX 10.4.11) iTunes keeps opening itself. Never did this before but recently ( a couple weeks ago) I allowed an auto software update, that's about the only change I can think of, but it only started doing this a couple days ago. I close the application and within a couple minutes it has opened itself again, underneath whatever application I happen to be using (close that app and there is iTunes, opened again lurking under the app window I was looking at). It does this over and over, even when the computer is in sleep mode.

Help?

I was having this issue before realizing I was the inadvertently causing it. My AppleTV sits, under my TV, on a wall in my living room facing my iMac which sits a short distance away on the opposite wall (if you can picture that). Turns out that the plastic frame around my TV was reflecting the signal from the apple tv remote back to the computer on the opposite wall which was triggering the iTunes app and causing it to open and play when I was just trying to watch Hulu on my apple tv 😊. Hope this post eases the insanity I imagine some of you (in my boat) are feeling.

It's not on a device.

Plus the fix is only for iTunes 10.5 working with an iOS 5 device.

If you are using the above two, then:

Open iTunes. In the left hand side bar, there should be an entry for your device. Normally, you sync by clicking that entry and clicking sync. Instead, click on that entry, and then make sure that the "summary" tab is open. Near the bottom, there are some checkboxes. Uncheck the "Open iTunes when this iDevice is connected".

THat should fix it.

Thanks for this fix - it has really helped me with iTunes opening up (constantly) after I upgraded to iTunes 10.5 and the new iOS5 on the iPad2. I guess what we're doing here is sacrificing the wi-fi sync capabilities of the device in order to keep iTunes closed. My wi-fi sync options are gone now that I unchecked that box - but the good news is that iTunes isn't opening every minute or so. I talked with an Apple rep who denied ever hearing iTunes opening on its own was an issue and from the posts I see in the Community boards and the internet this is nothing new... it happened back to 2005 or so on older versions of OS and iTunes.

If you have a way to use wi-fi syncing (the iCloud) would you post that? For now, I think I'll just use the USB port and the nice little white cord.

Thanks.

That's wierd... I have the "open itunes when device connected" box unchecked and wifi sync is still on (the wifi sync checkbox is visible--but I wifi sync with my laptop, not the iCloud)

Basically, "when this iPad is connected" means "all the time" bacause of the wifi thing. To fix this, one can either tell iTunes not to open on device connect, or one can disable wifi sync. Are you sure you haven't done the latter?

If you haven't its either the iCloud thing, or it (unlikely) is because the iPad 2 treats wifi sync a bit differently than iPad 1.

Have had this happening for the past week. (I'm using a Windows 7 PC with iPad and iPod Touch) Found a simple solution from an old Yahoo forum that seems to have fixed it for me:

Go to Start, Run, type in msconfig and hit enter. When the window opens look for Start-Up programs. Click on tab, check to see if iTunes is listed. If it is and has a check mark beside it (mine did), clear the check mark and restart your computer.

Hope this helps someone.

When you connect your iPhone / iPad to iTunes, it should show up in the left-side bar, under the Devices section.

Click on it. Then, on the Summary tab of the resulting sync pages, scroll down to the bottom, for a section called "Options" -- and you can uncheck "Open iTunes when this device is connected."

For me, I unchecked "Sync with this iPad/iPhone over Wi-Fi", which was causing my problem.

Wow this has been driving me craze same thing here. I found the problem to be my new Logitech G510 gaming keyboard. It has an LCD on it which one of the functions is to show what is playing (song). In the Logitech software I unchecked Logitech Media Display and rebooted. Now Itunes stays closed. I use Itunes just for my Iphone so I didnt notice it right away. I normally use Windows Media Player to play music on the PC and it would show up on the LCD display when playing a song, but when you would close Media Player it would stay closed.

My problem was with the alarm clock widget. But my itunes would have the problem in spats. It wouldnt close no matter how many times I "cmd+q"d the sucker. And sometimes it wouldn't affect it at all. The alarm clock widget had a volume control on it so not only would itunes not close it would set my volume so I couldn't adjust it. Thanks guys!
