iTunes keeps opening itself

I was having this issue before realizing I was the inadvertently causing it. My AppleTV sits, under my TV, on a wall in my living room facing my iMac which sits a short distance away on the opposite wall (if you can picture that). Turns out that the plastic frame around my TV was reflecting the signal from the apple tv remote back to the computer on the opposite wall which was triggering the iTunes app and causing it to open and play when I was just trying to watch Hulu on my apple tv 😊. Hope this post eases the insanity I imagine some of you (in my boat) are feeling.
For me it is absolutely the headphone jack. (macbook) I made all the recommended preferences changes to no effect. On the other hand, every time I jiggle the headphone plug iTunes pops up. Not sure how to fix this. My son had problems a few years ago with his headphone/speaker jack also. These issues need to be addressed with better/different hardware.
My iTunes just started doing this today. I haven't made any changes to my computer at all lately. In fact I haven't used iTunes in ages. I agree with strangelove1, it is absolutly the headphone jack. After reading that response, I wiggled my headphone jack and it opens iTunes and starts playing a song. Wiggle it again and it stops playing. In the last 5 minutes it has done this about 10 times. This is ridiculous. I'm trying to get some work done and iTunes is driving me bonkers.
For me the problem seemed to be an old Lastfm plug-in in...
~/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins/AudioScrobbler.bundle
After renaming the iTunes Plug-ins folder as in...
~/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins (Disabled)/AudioScrobbler.bundle
...and creating a new empty iTunes Plug-ins folder, I can Quit iTunes without worrying about it re-opening itself.
Thanks for the tip!
I've experienced the same problem today for the first time, but it is clear to me what has caused it on my MacBook Pro. In my case it was plugging in a pair of expensive TDK earphones (with mic) that caused i-Tunes to boot up relentlessly. If I swap to my TDKs for a pair of i-Phone earphones (with mic) it doesn't happen at all.
So, you boffins out there, any idea what's causing this and what I can do to prevent my Mac clashing with TDK and other spurious equipment in future?
This worked for me:
http://www.thebitguru.com/projects/iTunesPatch
Running 10.8.5 and iTunes 11.1.3.
Eliminates "Play" button on Mac keyboard from launching iTunes but, more importantly for me, stopped headphones (direct in + bluetooth) from accidentally launching iTunes.
Huzzah!
I just found a similar reason with the bluetooth. I have 2 headsets that would connect and one automatically tries streaming. Once I removed that device, the problem went away.
Interesting to note. It was still happening even when all my BT devices were turned off. So just the fact that the one device was registered in the BT settings created the issue.
Oh, my beloved Wacom tablet!
iTunes keeps launching by itself when I have my Wacom Intuos connected to my Mini 2011 and this behavior disappear as soon as I disconnected it.
Solution: I applied this patch and everything works fine now: https://github.com/thebitguru/play-button-itunes-patch
What I've done so far is not try to REBUILD the launchdb, but throw them out. Along with preferences, containers. So far, that works.
I mean, iTunes was launching at the unzip of a folder, in Downloads.
And to think how I looked forward to Mavericks. And no, a super-clean reinstall didn't help.
Thanks, yes it appears to be my non Apple headphones causing the issue. Wasn't obvious as I'd had them in all day without issue, but removing them removed the issue!
Probably just not seated correctly i.e. not snug in the socket so me moving about sent 'signals' the iTunes to start up play and pause etc.
It is also happening when connected to Bluetooth adapter. switching off bluetooth fixes it. Also, the opening is not random. for some reason it opens up whenever Mac is supposed to play a system sound (like emptying the recycle bin, exiting an application, etc).
I simply deleted all files from the iTunes folder as mentioned above (not the folders of backups). iTunes now behaves as it should
i had his problem too but i use rainmeter with itunes so i just restarted that and i worked
Download the free program MALWAREBYTES and run a scan. I did and it found two items that I immediately had it remove (all very easy and straightforward). It cured my renegade itunes problem.
I had this problem and discovered a new cause for it. Apparently my AppleTV remote launches iTunes on my laptop and changes songs with the buttons on it. To disable your AppleTV remote:
1. System Preferences
2. Privacy and Security
3. Click padlock in lower left corner to make changes and then Authenticate your username and password
4. Click Advanced...
5. Check "Disable remote control infrared receiver"
YOU. ARE. MY. HERO.
This has been making me crazy for a few weeks now. The first time it happened, I actually got a little scared... LOL!! I was looking around like there was a ghost in the room. But it quickly became beyond annoying. Just in the last 5 minutes iTunes has popped open 10 times. I had to turn the volume all the way down (not only does it open it starts to play music.)
I've been reading everything here and unclicking stuff, to no avail. Then I read this and unplugged my speakers from the headphone jack and voila!! iTunes hasn't opened once.
But therein lies an additional problem.... I can't have speakers now?? This is ridiculous. ðŸ˜
