I've been having this problem, and still experimenting, but it seems that the Blackberry Desktop software may have been the culprit. It installs itself to startup on login so may require removal in the Users & Groups preferences pane. Hope this helps someone.

I unchecked "Check for New Software Updates Automaticly" and "Automaticly retrieve CD track names from Internet" in the prefrences and it stopped opening.

I dont have any IOS devices, or any devices that would connect to iCloud so that wasnt my issue.

Hopefully that will work for others

Well, I feel like a dope.  I was just coming here to post about this problem when I realized that someone using my classroom had left an audio CD in the computer, and that was causing iTunes to open on startup/login.  At least it was an easy fix!

Thank you TrevelXP! This worked perfectly for me.

It looks like I've solved this on my machine. This may be of some help, check it out:

The way it worked for me was, I had my iphone headphones attached in my MBP and it was the reason that itunes was opening again and again...and again, as soon as I took them off, the bugger never showed up!

I have tried a number of things to resolve this issue. Prevent iPhones syncing checkbox, no wifi syncing, no dashboard widgets, deleting plist file etc.

Finally I found a solution after at least a year - delete iTunes app, (only .app not other files) and download and re-install.

It seems to solve the problem. Or has for the last few hours.

I've been having this happen too. I upgraded itunes to 10.5 and had no issue. But just 2 days ago, I got the iPhone 5, and now since setting that up, iTunes now opens, whenever I open any folder containing anything itunes related.

Open any 2 of the following folders and iTunes opens up.

    C:\Program Files\iTunes

    C:\ProgramData\Apple Computer\iTunes

And also today, I downloaded an iTunes installer package to my desktop for my Girlfriend. All was fine until I Copied and Pasted it to a thumbstick device. After having done that, iTunes repatedly kept opening until I was able to disconnect the thumbstick device. At that point it stopped.

I have no other folder or installer package do the same thing on my system ever.

This seems to be the issue for me as above poster. After racking my brain trying everyone elses "solutions" Ive found that its APPLE!!!! surprise surprise!? They have some sort of code written in one of the Itunes.exe's that basically opens itunes when anysort of window/folder associated with it is opened. I have dummy folder I use to store my music I want on my phone named "iTunes Phone Music". Even though i created the folder it seems apple recognizes it and starts the process of opening itunes for ya. Same went for folders where Apple/itunes stuff was actually installed on the drive. As soon as all folders were closed, the itunes constant "auto run" feature dissappears it allowed me to close the window.

Seems to be working since I figured this out. Hope this helps....and screw u apple for playing dumb to customers bringing forward this issue, and if you truly didnt know and couldnt find a solution, should mass fire everyone in tech. Its really disappointing the mutli billion $ company essentially has iTunes act as virus running its exe at will. Embarrassing.

I have been having this same issue.  I have an aluminum Macbook from late 2008 running Mountain Lion.  I think I have pinpointed what is causing the issue for me at any rate.  It is a hardware cause.  I have external speakers plugged into the headphone out jack. Harman Kardon Soundsticks to be specific.  I think they are picking up hum from the electrical wires and other wires on my desk or when the jack is physically disturbed when I move something.  I was  able to recreate the issue by simply rotating the jack in position, in doing so it caused an audible pop and iTunes opened up and started playing music.  I am not sure how to fix it, short of unplugging my speakers.  I need to report this to Apple and see what they say.

Had my ipad a few days now. The constant reopening of itunes was irritating, my fix was to log out of the itune store. no more auto opening.

I had this problem on Mac OS X 10.8.2 and iTunes 11.0.1.

I was able to fix it by opening Activity Monitor and then force quitting the AppleMobileDeviceHelper.

I have found this problem to be so incredibly annoying!  Most of the fixex talked about here are for windows machines. It is impossible to delete the app as it is on windows. Mac refuses to let you deletd this messed up application. I have external speakers plugged in but I need them plugged in. This is probably the issue since I don't have any iphone or ipad, and have turned off every possible itunes store preference and widget etc.  It is reallly driving me MAD!!!!!!!

*** doesn't Apple simply put a preference option for remote controlling itunes with your headphones????????????  I really don't appreciate the direction their software has headed and is so invasive into my stuff.  I used to love Apple but I have pretty much had it with them because of this and many more numerous issues. About ready to throw this piece of junk macbook pro out the window!

I've had this 17" MBP for about 6 months (refurbished) and thus problem just started!  Eeek !   I do not like iTunes for a number of reasons and have used other software to work around having to use iTunes for anything, but this is most annoying.   I tried signing out of iTunes to see whether that works ... I have NetFlix running on the TV with home sharing, and am wondering if that is the trigger.  Apple is so arrogant and stupid at times .... really ***** !

I read your post and turns out that is what is causing my problem as well.  Have you been in contact with Apple?  Have they offered a solution?
