iWeb Sites Unpublished

I updated iWeb today.

When I went into iWeb to publish a page, I found that all sites were red now. I thought that was odd for an update. So, after updating a page, i published that site (I have several). All was well. I published the next site. But, as it started to publish, the first site changed back to red. So, I published that one again, and as it updated, the second site changed back to red.

I am using MoblieMe and have had no such issues in the past.

What is going on?

Interesting. So this red/blue thing is dictated by the MMe servers. I thought there had to be some sort of interference.
Now this could mean that this just needs a fix of the Apple servers, not of our computers. However, turning a site red on our desktops would normally mean that something changed in our sites. That was the problem already when adding a post to site A then something was damaged in site B, though the damaged sites did not turn red in my case.
I am so tired of checking everything. When I now go and check all my sites, I fear that only doing that may get me into further trouble.
I don't trust iWeb at all at this moment.
Fortunately I am now blogging with Sandvox. But I sure want my existing iWeb sites to remain in good condition.
There is no reason why Apple servers should interfere with sites that are ok and haven't been changed at all. It looks like they are ruining things from the Apple servers.

Put your sites on to separate domain files and all will work as planned.

I don't think it will Roddy. Sites are still being completely re-published, even when a change is very small.

Apart from that ... yes it's good to find workarounds, but that's not a solution. It's far from ideal to have to open different domains for each project/client/whatever. That it should work as advertised would be good and is indeed desirable. Everything in one place. Nice and simple. See it at-a-glance. All of those are reasons we like the Mac. Let's not loose sight of that.

FWIW ... yesterday, sites on which nothing had changed, but which were RED, all suddenly turned BLUE after a restart, reflecting their correct state. So, it can happen both ways.

As I publish to a local folder and upload to Host Excellence, I tried a test on this as soon as I had installed the update. Everything now works as it should.

This thread has grown while I slept!

I just tried making a change on one page of a test site which is about 4 MB.
I selected "Publish Site Changes" and it published to MobileMe in about a minute. While doing so, all the pages turned red but, as soon as the site was published, they all turned blue again.
I quit and relaunched and they are still blue.

As I pointed out previously in this thread, I have all my sites on separate domain files stored in separate folders so this is not a fair test as most of you seem to have multiple sites on one domain file.

From some of the problems noted in this thread, I would suspect that it's not all down to iWeb and that MobileMe is at least, in part, contributing to this.

I note from another thread that FTP publishing is not working for some either.

I have been using iWeb for a number of years and, apart from a problem with it screwing up text under certain conditions, I haven't had too much trouble with this version.

This doesn't alter the fact that iWeb should work out of the box as it must be confusing, if not impossible, for beginners to handle these issues.

My main concern is that Apple is still not thoroughly testing this product and the fact that the press are giving it positive reviews when it still doesn't work as advertised.

You are lucky (and wise), Roddy. Splitting up sites would surely help. The site I recently updated is now blue, but all others are and remain red.
This is something Apple has to fix. For Xs sake, how can they expect US to do the programming?
What if the next iWeb update split up our sites for us. Then they would get rid of this problem. I am getting madder and madder, and that colour doesn't suit me.
Apple is losing its userfriendliness in a devastating tempo.

The strange thing is that iWeb seems to be going backwards while other similar applications are moving ahead and incorporating useful features, and actually getting them to work.
Its difficult to figure out the mindset of the iWeb developers. They seem to have a game plan all of their own which does not appear to involve user input and doesn't even work.

This subject of the dysfunctional iWeb FTP goes on and on....

I have been able to upload with it from day one but I use a setup that forces it to work.

My advice, and Apple's too, is to publish to a local folder and upload using a reliable FTP application.
If you don't have one, use the freeware Cyberduck.

The iWeb FTP is obviously not going to work for all the people all the time any time soon. Publishing to a local folder and uploading to a reliable hosting service is really the only option until iWeb can optimize the files and includes SEO functions.

Done here as well, in capitals.
The only thing I now pray for is that some previous bugs were indeed fixed. When I added a post today, I checked my other sites, and I didn't see any misplaced images and the rss feed seems ok as well.
So pray let this 'turning red' thing only be an unimportant cosmetic detail, something that does not affect anything in our sites, that there were no actual changes made to our sites when this happened and that the Apple servers will soon fix it. Amen.
