Hi kingfilou, and a warm welcome to the forums! 🙂

You have to use different ports to relay to/through another ISP/Mail Server, and Secure mail, probably SSL Authentication, (it's about cutting out Spam).

The POP3 port for inbound emails is 110 (995 if you want to use secured POP3)

And the IMAP port for inbound emails is 143 (993 if you want to use secured IMAP)

The SMTP port for outbound emails is 25 or 2525 (465 or 587 if you want to use secured SMTP)

Thanks for infos. I tried out all the possibilities without success. smtpauth.bluewin.ch does not support SSL at port 465 and 587. I only get the message: Check all the inputs to the SMTP server for correctness and ask your Systemadministrator for further advise. Who is the Systemadministrator? Inbound mail is OK.

Who is the Systemadministrator?

It appears to be kingfilou! 🙂

Hmm, seems there directions differ...

Enter the number 587 into the "Outgoing server (SMTP):" field.
Click "OK" then "Close".

... set up to use SMTP authentication. You can now increase the security level, and transmit your e-mails via an SSL encrypted connection. The SSL (Secure Socket Layer) protocol makes the data stream "tap-proof".

You must make the following settings:

Incoming server (POP3): pop3s.bluewin.ch
Outgoing server (SMTP): smtpauths.bluewin.ch

... enter the number 465 into the "Outgoing server (SMTP):" field. Check the option "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)".

Type the number 995 into the "Incoming server (POP3):" field. Check the option "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)".

These directions are foe Outlook on a PC, but should be the same for you...

many thanks for info. After Easter I will see my brother who is using Mac and Internet provider Swisscom (bluewin). There I will try to apply all the infos.
Here I am using the provider from sunrise. Now I have a question. On my test computer I installed 2 accounts, one for sunrise and the other for swisscom (bluewin). I can receive the messages with both accounts. When i send a msg from my account (joe27@sunrise.ch) it will go out via port 465 (SSL) Server:smtp.gmail.com. OK. When I try to send a msg out from the other account (h.holenstein@bluemail.ch) I receive the message:smtpauth.bluewin.ch cannot be reached via port 465 but the mail will be sent out via smtp.gmail.com which works.
My question: Does the outgoing mail (bluewin) SMTP Server: smtp.auth.bluewin.ch require the Swisscom internet provider? (I am using here sunrise internet.) If not, I may have a problem with the password. Have a nice weekend!

It also does not work . I finally don't trust my Test Computer (Jaguar) any more. I work with Leopard and Internet provider sunrise. Activated MAIL according instruction and it works fine. After Easter I will see my brother who has a "clean" Computer (Tiger). His Internet provider is Swisscom. He has to log-in at swisscom to work Internet mail. I will try to activate his Apple MAIL Program according to the instruction you have sent to me.Thanks! I will let you know about the results.

YAWN- tired- but had to look at one more...I wonder if you arehaving the swiss version of what happened with me and a friend who is a hotmail address. I got a thing saying rejected for policy reasons, talk to the admin... and they meant ISP- the people who you get internet connection from have their settings in disagreement with the place that is rejecting your mail - if it IS like my situation... so you contact them, tell them you are not allowed to send mail though you are paying for the service, and show them the message you get. Then allow up to a day or two- if they are good and talented, they call them immediately and make the settings adjustments that hour... but, well, service ain't what it used to be. Gut nacht.

Thanks! I will stop making any more trials. After Easter I will see my brother (he is using iMac OS-X Tiger and the Internet provider is Swisscom/bluewin).
In the Swisscom Internet help file I found an online instruction for MAIL (OS-X 10.4 Tiger). During installation the connections to the servers will be checked in realtime. In the instruction it says that the mail password must be min. 8 signs long. I always had trouble with the password since I used a shorter one. During installation I can create a new Password online via customer support. I will report my results after Easter. HAPPY EASTER!!

I have found that there is an intermittent problem with Apple Mail, all versions. One thing I have noticed is that on ever occasion when I can't send the mail, I go to Apple web mail and it never fails to seed. As a layman this tells me the problem is in the application. I am afraid that Apple is putting too much effort in hardware gadgets (they have to keep moving to compete) and possibly short changing the debugging of some of their software. And yes, I have tried playing with the configuration and that is not the problem. Love to get your thoughts as this is an annoyance for sure.

Problem solved!
1) Internet provider is Swisscom
E-mail address is xxx@bluewin.ch
SMTP server: smtpauth.bluewin.ch
outgoing server port 587 SSL deaktivated
incoming mail server : pop.bluewin.ch
Server port 110 SSL deaktivated
(Password min. 8 digits long)
2) Internet provider is sunrise
E-mail address yyy@sunrise.ch
SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
outgoing server port 465 SSL aktivated
incoming mail server: pop.gmail.com
Server port 995 SSL aktivated

Both settings work fine! Thanks for your advice and help!! Problem is solved.
