Slow and hanging

I have been having problems with my iMac; it slow downs to a halt and it hangs, the ball keeps rolling, and my screen becomes distorted, with lines in the middle, and also, the screen stops refreshing. i.e. Portions of prior pages stays on the screen. Any idea what the reason may be?

IMAC6.1, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

That sounds like a hardware issue, but I'm confounded by how the spinning beach ball would relate.

Have you first tried repairing disk permission on your primary/OS drive (Finder > Go > Utilities > Disk Utility > Repair Permissions)?

I repaired disk permissions, but, I was unable to repair disk. Does anyone know how do I check my Graphic Card?

Hi alik59;

Exactly how did you attempt to repair the disk?

The system will not allow you to repair the disk from which it is booted. The suggested way around this is to boot from the install media and then run Disk Utility from there.
