internal or external HD for using FCP

Internal will generally be faster and cheaper to implement.

PS. I have 5 HDs in my Pro...

Internal is the way to go...cheap and fast.

I too have 5 drives in my MacPro. One is cleverly tucked into the spare optical bay. I'll wager Nick's is too.

Shane is right. I got the [Pro Caddy|http://www.transintl.com/store/category.cfm?Category=2704], because its easier than taking the entire computer apart.

I've tucked a couple of extra drives in the 2nd optical bay using the maxPro. These are my system drives (operating system and cloned backup)

This leaves the oem 4 bays available for swapping drives as needed for archiving.

Deafie... why would you need internal or external drives... this should be the 1st question.
Are you editing HD / HDV / DV...
Do you use one machine? (editing on field and finishing at studio)
Do you have a "price problem"?

I think this should be the first things you should ask yourself... because (and don´t get me wrong!) you´re asking us if it is necessary to raid them (?) ok, get a lot of 500gb as Shane did and use them as individual drives... with external case or some "ice-cream sticks" (this one for you Shane 🙂 )

But yeah, the new MacPro gives you internal spaces...and 2 connections on the logicboard. so you can get adapters to move your system drive to this empty slot.
