Question

*** Have to re-render every time I open my project

Something's been happening for a while now and I've been meaning to post about it but haven't had time. When I take an external HD from my editor and plug it into my MBP, I usually render out the sequence, play it back, proof it and then when changes are in, output the final product. The problem is, on a more regular basis, each time I render it out, save, and then close it - when I re-open the project on the same computer (same setup), the whole sequence needs to be re-rendered again!!!

I can't necessarily leave the project open for the entire proofing/changes stage but it's incredibly frustrating that when I have to re-open it on my own after no additional changes have been made to the project that it needs to be rendered again.

Does anyone know why this is happening and if so, how I can avoid it from continuing?

Here are my stats in case anyone is wondering:
Footage - HDV
Timeline - HDV
Computers involved - 24" iMac and a new MBP
FCP version - 6.0.5

The same thing happend to me! This happend when i just started with fcp and it drove me insane! Even if you open textedit or whatever and go back to fcp you have to re-render. I started thinking it was normal. Ive posted a couple threads about that issue here myself. People sugested trashing the prefs etc but nothing worked. Then i re-installed fcp and the problem was gone. So i strongly sugest you do the same.

Hmm very peculiar.

I would check your Cache sizes. Somehow I think the render files are over your allotted cache amount, and when you quit it just discards the info.

So in a sense when restart FCP you have to rerender everything. If your scratch disks are external drives I would double check all scratch locations and allotted cache size and see if that doesn't fix the problem.

Does the name of your external drive contain any non-alphanumeric characters?
