Panasonic NV-DS60

Hi,
I'm trying to connect my Panasonic NV-DS60 digital camcorder to iMovie via FireWire, but the computer won't recognise it.

I've had a look at other posts about Panasonic camcorders, and tried the suggestions provided - with no success. The Apple website [http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/camcorders.html] is of little use - it redirects to the Panasonic site, which yielded no help!

I've seen a few people suggest that the only way to use these cameras over FireWire is on windoze ... is that true? Has anybody else been able to get the NV-DS60 to successfully connect to iMovie?

I don't have a Panny NV-DS60, but if you're in the UK, it just might be that the camcorder has a DV-OUT-only connection: some European camcorders' connectors are disabled from getting an analogue signal or digital signal IN, as that would classify them as 'video recorders', and they'd be taxed at a higher rate, so they'd cost more.

The reviews I've read (..e.g; here..) suggest that this camcorder has DV OUT (..from the camera to iMovie..) only, and not DV IN (..from iMovie back to the camera).

If so, iMovie may not recognise the camcorder if you're trying to send material back out from iMovie TO the camera. If it can't establish a connection - even when trying to import FROM the camera - by iMovie sending a message TO it and trying to get the camcorder's response, then iMovie may not understand that the camera is, in fact, plugged in.

Try setting the camera to Playback and starting to play a tape immediately before plugging it into your Mac. That may force iMovie to "see" the DV signal coming from the camcorder, and thus it may recognise it.

Thanks, I'll have to give it a try and see how it goes. I'm actually in Australia, so it is a PAL cam ... most likely the same as the UK model.
