Panther cannot change language & where are startup items ?

Hi,

this topic is to solve some problems I got with an iBook G4 someone lent to me to bring it back on its feet.

The first problem is I don't want to use English as the system's language. I'm supposed to place the language I want as the first choice in the International settings; not only I put French as the first choice, but I removed the others, and relaunched the Finder. Nothing changed, it's still in English.

The second problem is that some programs start on login for every user listed on the computer, and that these programs are not in the Accounts options. I checked in the /Library folder, looking for a Startup Items folder, but didn't found any.

Panther is different from Leopard, and seems it doesn't have this folder. I'm not at all familiar with Panther, and searches on the Internet haven't returned a viable result, as the OS is probably too old.

Apart from that, there are some performance issues, but I assume this is due in a great part to the 256MB RAM it sports. Don't ask, this iBook will be retired in like 6 month, so I won't buy RAM for it. The computer is a bit slow when running 2 or 3 apps at a time

I don't want to reformat for these kind of issues which are surely minor for whoever knows the system a bit. I was told the OS was reinstalled by an authorized but nevertheless careless Apple service center. My friend hasn't understood what they told they did to the machine except changing the hard drive, and didn't bother to ask again.

Thx for help

If the option to install the other languages was not selected when Panther was installed, French is not there to select. Any changes you make in the International preferences do not take affect until the next time you log in. For applications, the next time you open them.

For the startup items, in the Preference window, click on Accounts. In the Accounts window that opens, click on Login Items. This shows the applications that will automatically open when the select account is opened. You can do a temporary stop/open on an app by clicking Hide. You can remove a selected app by selecting it and clicking the -. You can do this for each Account.

 Cheers, Tom 😉

That probably means that someone did not install, or later removed, the French localization files. The installers for these are normally found on the 2nd Panther install CD.

Ooooh, that probably changes EVERYTHING! I'm used to Leopard's way of doing it: each major language on the first disk, and the second one only for iLife. If Panther needs to have the option to install other languages activated, that feeds the careless service center rumor.

I will still try to reboot the machine.

But for the startup items, I ALREADY checked the Login Items in each accounts: the programs that still start aren't listed there. That's why I was looking for another place where start-up programs are defined.

In Panther, as in Tiger and Leopard, all localizations are installed by default, despite the fact they are on the second disk (you are asked to insert it at some point). The person doing the installation would have to select a custom install in order not to have them, or use some app to remove them (sometimes done to save space) afterwards.

If you have a DVD instead of 2 CD's, then there is only one disk.

Well, I assume this issue is "solved", because I finally upgraded her iBook with Tiger, installing it on a freshly formatted hard drive.

Now, she can use Safari again (latest version available), mount disks formatted with my Leopard MacBook, install recent applications...

As an added bonus, she feels it's more responsive than before, despite it being more heavy on real RAM (only 256MB, and a few tens free without any app running - she will soon see the need for at least 256MB more - Make an offer 😉

I still feel it as sluggish, but this is in comparison to the MacBook.
