iPhone as remote for MacBook Pro

Hello,
I have three apps on my iPhone that I'd like to try to use as remotes for my laptop, but I can't get them to work.
They all rely on an ethernet or wi-fi connection, so I've tried to set up a network through airport, but it doesn't seem to help.
I've only tried the default setting with the automatic channel and no password, but my iPhone can't find the network at all. My iPhone's Wi-Fi is turned on by the way.
Any ideas? I get the impression that I need an Airport Express for this to work, but it seems crazy, and I'm travelling and living in hotel rooms so would like to get this sorted without extra hardware.
Cheers,
James

Keynote Remote

The main requirements for both remotes apple makes would be

-Latest OS Updates
-Latest iTunes Update http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
-Latest Remote App updates which can be obtained via the App Store

-WiFi connection for the iPhone which is connected to the same network as the computer you want to control iTunes, Apple TV, or Keynote from.
