Automatic Volume Increase

My volume control increases itself to full volume and has a constant beep like I am continually pushing down the volume increase button. This seems to come from using the space bar. Could it be as simple as a keyboard problem? I haven't had any problems with this keyboard. Its just over a year old. Its an Apple keyboard.

I can turn it back down using the keys on my Apple USB keyboard, but it goes back up a few minutes later. Any ideas what's causing this? Unplugging and reconnecting my keyboard hasn't fixed it, and neither has rebooting multiple times. If I unplug and reconnect my keyboard, it increases the volume to max when I reconnect.

The only way I can control it is to leave my headphones plugged in and turn it down every time it happens. Any suggestions??

Hi BDAqua, thanks for the welcome.
It's just weird that this started happening out of the blue for no reason. There have been no changes to anything in my setup. I can test with another keyboard, but I'd like to figure this out as well.

I did the Terminal test. Nothing in Terminal at all; just the volume maxing out when I reconnected the keyboard.

I checked System Preferences and didn't see any Keyboard shortcuts for volume.

Thanks for the help...it was nice to have some direction on where to start looking for the problem. I'm new to a Mac, so I'm learning as I go. 🙂

Hi PreemieMom, and a warm welcome to the forums! 🙂

It does sound like the Keyboard is bad, or a key stuck.

If you don't have another KB to test with, then open Terminal in Utilities, unplug & plugin the KB, does anything show in the Terminal Window?

Also check System Preferences>Keyboard & Mose to see if any Keyboard Shortcuts are set to increase volume.

Don't worry, plenty of really great helpers here, and they also were new to Macs at one time! 😉

I can test with another keyboard, but I'd like to figure this out as well.

That other KB is part of trying to figure it out, if another one doesn't do it we can focus on your KB. 🙂

Sorry for taking so long, but I finally got to where I could test another keyboard with my Mac. Turns out, it's my keyboard. This other one works just fine with no volume controlling at all.

Any ideas what could be wrong/what I can do to fix mine?

I have noticed a few things lately. It is only certain keys that cause the volume issue...all of the bottom row keys, the left Apple key and the space bar. It's very weird. Also noticed that the increase volume key and the mute volume key do not work. Just some added details.

You can try blowing it out with compressed air, or turning it upside down and tapping it hard enough to dislodge some particles.

Already tried that. I did both before I posted to the forum. It's pretty much as clean as I'm going to get it without taking it apart and still being screwy.
