I just got through a similar exchange with iTunes "support." Incredibly useless. This is not the kind of support I expect from Apple, and I will just take my business to Amazon and other competitors.

I've been having this problem for over a week now. I called Apple back again today, after not getting an answer previously, and talked to a sympathetic and bewildered Justin. He had not heard of the problem before, and I gave him the URL for this thread. He sounded determined to help get this resolved, but it surprises me that so prevalent an issue seems to have missed the Apple support team. Maybe iTunes support is dropping the ball/covering up something? I don't know. I just find it frustrating that we can't get an answer that makes sense.
